ICE nabs littering migrants
Thanks to the well-documented migrant penchant for littering, ICE reportedly made a big score in Washington State’s Mount Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest over Labor Day weekend.
Via KING 5 (emphasis added):
A Labor Day weekend camping trip in the Mount Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest ended with five men in immigration detention after their families say U.S. Forest Service rangers collected identification from some members of their group.
The five Western Washington families say they were camping together when rangers approached their campsite over what the rangers described as a "garbage issue."
Hours later, according to the families, federal immigration agents arrived at their campsite with the rangers and arrested five men.
Now, their wives and children are back home trying to find attorneys and worried the men could be transferred away from the ICE detention center in Tacoma before they can secure legal representation…
Just before midnight Friday, the families say they were awakened by agents outside their tents.
"Just heard agents outside, forcefully shaking our tents," Carmen said. "They were saying, 'Come out, we're police.'"
Carmen said she stepped out, along with her mother and father, thinking it was police. However, a few minutes later, she said one of the agents eventually identified himself differently. According to the families, federal immigration agents had returned to the campsite with the Forest Service rangers.
"He was like, 'I need you to stay calm when I tell you this. We're actually immigration agents,'" she recalled.
Five men were arrested, including Carmen's father, Acucena's husband and three other relatives.
"Home feels empty without them," Carmen said with tears in her eyes. She also said the agents left the women so someone could take care of the kids and only arrested the five men. There were a handful of children at the campsite, ages one through 14.

Let us assemble our tiny violins and get ready for some real slow strokes; local news was quick on the draw for a heart-wrenching segment featuring a couple of the teary-eyed Latinxes deprived of their illegal immigrant husbands.

Was the garbage thing a pretext to go fishing for some names and IDs?
Possibly.
If it was, I can’t pretend to care that much; on the long and growing list of brazen Fourth Amendment abuses by the government, harassing illegal immigrants at national parks doesn’t top my priority list.

At any rate, that the migrants in this instance were actually littering is entirely plausible; because they almost universally come from low-trust societies, they aren’t known for their respect for social conventions, like not trashing public lands.
In a way, they might not even deserve blame, though they definitely deserve deportation; their disrespect for the commons is a product of the culture they’ve imported with them; they simply don’t understand that the world isn’t their personal garbage can.
