The American Potemkin

Watching political sausage get made is usually an ugly experience that requires a long shower; watching the Karamel-uh sausage in progress is downright soul-crushing.

Folks, no malarkey, Jack: campaigning literally couldn’t get any faker than this without literal CGI.

Last Sunday, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania — a must-win state for the Democrats — Kamala and her Chinese agent business partner, Tim Walz, descended on a locally famous restaurant called Primanti Brothers to get some pictures of themselves doing relatable peasant things, as if all of their meals aren’t privately catered affairs.

The scene was faker than you might even imagine.

I assume most of our well-read and enlightened audience is familiar with the term, but for those unfamiliar with the reference in the title, “Potemkin Village” refers to entirely concocted scenes of grateful subjects designed to gratify the empress of Russia in the 18th century.

Via Britannica (emphasis added):

Potemkin village, in its original meaning, any of a number of fake villages designed to impress the Russian empress Catherine the Great. The term has also come to be used to describe an elaborate facade designed to hide an undesirable reality…

Potemkin arranged for fake pasteboard villages—complete with waving, happy peasants who had been moved in from central Russia, herds of farm animals, and fireworks—to be set up along the river. As Catherine’s boat arrived she was greeted by throngs of grateful subjects; when her boat had passed, the “towns” were quickly dismantled and moved, along with the livestock and throngs of peasants, to a location farther downriver to await her sailing by. Thus, Potemkin created the appearance of a prosperous and happy population to hide his own insufficient execution of the colonization efforts.

So, in the service of creating their own Potemkin village, the real people eating at the restaurant were suddenly expelled at 4 p.m., clearing the restaurant out, and then a cadre of Democrat thespians showed up to create the scene.

Via RedState (emphasis added):

A bunch of white vans rolled up. People who had been tossed out and others said they had brought in people to have an "audience" in the restaurant, Sam DeMarco, the Republican Committee of Allegheny County chairman, reported. "Holy hell, all these actors in these vans,"  one of the men shouted.

Then Kamala and her team rolled up in her bus and went in to greet the "customers" in the restaurant. You can see that on this video from the local news WFAA. It starts with Kamala word salads and her failure to answer how she was going to pay for her "plans" that cost so much, but at about 4:26, you can see Harris, her husband, and Walz greeting the "customers." At about 5:00, is where a smiling customer thanks Kamala for bringing it all "back."

The problem that Kamala — and the entire Democrat Party, actually — has is one of glaring inauthenticity. Her staff is aware of this flaw, which voters find repugnant — Trump’s idiosyncratic and clearly real charm was one of the main reasons he took over the party in 2015 amid an ocean of Jeb Bush-type robots.

But inauthenticity is one problem that can’t be solved with more grooming, more planning, or more staged events — they only reinforce the palpable sensation of phoniness in the voters’ mouths.

You can’t fake authenticity, almost by definition.

So they’re left with these cringy, canned, desperate public appearances like this, which, thankfully for us, are easier than ever to expose via liberated Twitter/X.
