Kill the Bill

Whoa:

The comprehensive immigration overhaul being taken up in the Senate this week could cost taxpayers $6.3 trillion if 11 million illegal immigrants are granted legal status, according to a long-awaited estimate by the conservative Heritage Foundation.

The cost would arise from illegal immigrants tapping into the government’s vast network of benefits and services, many of which are currently unavailable to them. This includes everything from standard benefits like Social Security and Medicare to dozens of welfare programs ranging from housing assistance to food stamps.

The report was obtained in advance by Fox News.

“No matter how you slice it, amnesty will add a tremendous amount of pressure on America’s already strained public purse,” Robert Rector, the Heritage scholar who prepared the report, said in a statement.

Our immigration system is broken. There can be no doubt that it’s in serious need of reform.

But this reform? Even if you support it in theory, the fact is we just don’t have the money.

UPDATE: You can get Heritage’s full report in PDF here.

Hey, illegal immigrants already collect benefits. My neighbor worked in admissions at the hospital. She'd do files in English, and then switch to Spanish to speak to illegal immigrant mothers. She'd guide them through getting benefits- housing, food, more medical care, all of it. They would thank her by cleaning her house, fixing her fence, working on her yard. Her place was immaculate at all times, with three kids and two incontinent cats. Imagine weekly steam-cleaning on your carpet.

And, eating out most nights.

While on welfare for her own kids. Two giant SUVs, a wide- screen TV, and so on and so forth.

They already get benefits.

How much would we pick up in tax revenues?

That information is in the executive summary.
"Over a lifetime, the former unlawful immigrants together would receive $9.4 trillion in government benefits and services and pay $3.1 trillion in taxes. They would generate a lifetime fiscal deficit (total benefits minus total taxes) of $6.3 trillion. (All figures are in constant 2010 dollars.)"

@ Zeprin: "One time cash payment for those who choose to return"

Absolutely not. Any time you pay someone for their absence, they'll sell it to you over and over and yet again. Look up the origins of Danegeld. It's the gold the english paid the vikings NOT to raid. They were happy to keep coming back every year to collect.

Do you think for an instant that the O administration wouldn't immediately begin printing up pamphlets in spanish detailing how to collect multiple times? They'd probably be a flyer in the "how to collect welfare upon sneaking north" magazines currently being distributed.

So through on some qualifications. A minimum residency requirement. Say 5 year wait for benefits eligibility. Dependent on budgetary restraints. No Convicted Felons Need Apply. In fact automatic deportation for felons following incarceration. One time cash payment for those who choose to return to their country of origin. Equal to what they have or would have paid into the system (SS/MC/MCd). There are things that can make it work.

"This includes everything from standard benefits like Social Security and Medicare"

These programs are already going to go broke, so we should add more people to them? Leftwing logic.
