Breitbart pursued. Barry One threatened to sue. After days of media silence, Random House, the publisher of Not That Kind of Girl, issued a statement that was essentially a load of bull, claiming no wrongdoing but instead “regretting confusion” and offering to pay Barry One’s legal fees to date. Here’s the kicker:
Our offer will allow Mr. Minc and his client to donate all of the crowd-funding raised to not-for-profit organizations assisting survivors of rape and sexual assault.
Vomit. Go ahead. I did in my head. But wait until after you read Lena Dunham’s barf-worthy “woe is me” comment issued after days of media silence (and Olivia Pope-worthy legal strategics, no doubt):
Speaking out was never about exposing the man who assaulted me. Rather, it was about exposing my shame, letting it dry out in the sun. I did not wish to be contacted by him or to open a criminal investigation. I am in a loving and peaceful place in my life and I am not willing to sacrifice any more of it for this person I do not know, aside from one night I will never forget. That is my choice.
…[Rape survivors] have the right to tell their stories, to take back control after the ultimate loss of control. There is no right way to survive rape and there is no right way to be a victim. What survivors need more than anything is to be supported, whether they choose to pursue a criminal investigation or to rebuild their world on their own terms.
Even if those terms include, well, lying about who raped you and then loudly crying victim before the entirety of the alleged rape incident could be publicly questioned. Hey, if UVA chicks can do it, why can’t “feminism is a brand” Dunham?
I’ll leave Breitbart to further pursue their crusade against Dunham’s character. The bigger issue at stake is only exemplified by Dunham’s actions: The need for contemporary feminists to cry “rape” in order to improve their branding. Ann Coulter knocks it out of the park here:
College must be difficult for white, straight coeds, because it’s so hard to be a victim. You’re not black, you’re not gay, you don’t have leprosy—what can you do to acquire victim cool? Join the rape club!
On college campuses, two millennia of Anglo-Saxon law has been scrapped in deference to sexual assault doctrines that would embarrass Chairman Mao. Young men’s futures are being put in the hands of the most closed-minded, reason-free, quick-to-accuse, unfair, standardless humans on Earth.
I’m sorry we were popular in high school! Can you stop accusing us of rape now?
In penance for publishing a book that falsely accused Oberlin’s Barry of rape, Random House offered to pay his legal fees, suggesting that his law firm “donate all of the crowd-funding raised (to sue Random House) to not-for-profit organizations assisting survivors of rape and sexual assault.”
Heads: rape hoax hysterics win; tails: men falsely accused of rape lose. How about donating it to organizations that assist survivors of false rape accusations?
Feminism was a movement originally intended to empower women. Contemporary feminists seem to want nothing more than to cry “victim” at every turn, and it’s more than a slap in the face to the real survivors of rape and sexual assault. Breitbart’s crusade is righteous, but in the end it’s a Scandal-worthy character battle that will come and go. The responsibility for real action belongs to true feminists who refuse to see fellow and future women wallow in the pit of self-righteous victimization.
