President Obama has taken even the threat of military action or aid to Ukraine off the table. In an interview with the local NBC affiliate in San Diego, Obama said “We are not going to be getting into military excursion in Ukraine. What we are going to do is mobilize all of our diplomatic resources to make sure that we’ve got a strong international correlation that sends a clear message.”

Whatever that message is, Putin doesn’t seem to care. He rattled his saber at Estonia, a NATO ally, today, stirred up separatism in Bosnia and signaled a change in Russian policy with Iran. Not bad for one day’s work.

Obama scoffs at the notion that Putin took the US military into his consideration at all, which may be correct: “His strategic decisions are no way based on whether he thought that we might go to war over this.”

“I think there’s a clear understanding that when it comes to our core interests or our NATO allies we can protect ourselves,” Obama said.

A careful, Clintonian parsing of that last line could cause some confusion, as it could mean that even if NATO allies are threatened — and one has been, as of today — the United States is ready to protect…itself.

I still remember when Obama was musing aloud about the prospect of nukes falling on America. I think he was envisioning the prospect of a "non-state actor" (terrorists, as opposed to overt representatives of a country like Iran) detonating a nuke or dirty bomb on US soil. Anyway, Obama astonished me by talking about how America could endure a nuke or two and rebuild. There was not one word about tracking down the culprits or their sponsors! He was simply going to preside while we licked our wounds and not do a dam* thing about a major attack on America. Well, maybe he would have launched another apology tour but he certainly wouldn't have taken military action.

That's why I'm not remotely surprised that he cannot begin to imagine using the armed forces of the USA to assist Ukraine at this time.

That was said about Clinton, but Obama, too? Do you have links to the speeches where he said that?

I'm not supporting Obama but instead find that ominous. Think about all those executive orders and such Obama has issued that would give him virtually unlimited power in a national emergency. What better way to seize all that power than if Seattle or Chicago were nuked? All the panic and hysteria, people would be howling for Obama to become dictator and save them.

Yeah, it always works when the schoolyard bully is publicly punching a little kid, for you to say "I'm not going to hit you, but you need to stop, or else."

There's always the risk that the bully will die laughing when you say something like that. Otherwise, yeah, there is little chance the bully will be deterred.
