Bob Costas of NBC Sports waded into the controversy over the Washington Redskins nickname Sunday night, devoting a commentary to the topic at halftime of the nationally televised game between the Redskins and the Dallas Cowboys.
“Think for a moment about the term ‘Redskins’ and how it truly differs from [other team nicknames based on Native American images],” Costas said. “Ask yourself what the equivalent would be, if directed [at] African-Americans. Hispanics. Asians. Or members of any other ethnic group. When considered that way, ‘Redskins’ can’t possibly honor a heritage, or a noble character trait, nor can it possibly be considered a neutral term.
“It is an insult, a slur, no matter now benign the present-day intent,” Costas continued.
That’s how Bob Costas occupied halftime during the Dallas Cowboys win over the Washington Redskins. Costas had gone through a list of college and universities that have changed their name to go along with political correctness to build a case for the Redskins being forced to change theirs. But in in all his words, Costas never mentioned that the Redskins’ fight song says “Hail to the Redskins.” That’s a relevant fact, isn’t it? Does one sing “hail” to something that one intends to insult? It took two seconds to find this on YouTube. Costas couldn’t find it? Was he stuck trying to sign up for Obamacare?
Last night wasn’t the first time Costas made a fool of himself during a halftime. Last December, during another Cowboys halftime, Costas blamed “gun culture” for the murder-suicide of Kansas City Chiefs player Jovan Belcher. Costas later said that those comments were a “mistake,” but as is the case with the rest of the mainstream media, his “mistakes” always hail from the left.
NBC had to part ways with the polarizing Keith Olbermann. It should do the same with the increasingly polarizing Bob Costas. Leave the politics out of football.
More: I’ll just leave this right here for the sensitivity police.
That said, the team will end up having to change the name. The PC stormtroopers will win, eventually, because they are always looking for something to be offended by, and they just never ever give up on imposing themselves.
