NJ Sen. Frank Lautenberg (D) has passed away, according to Fox News.

The 89-year-old Democrat was New Jersey’s longest-serving senator. He had retired from the Senate, but returned in a questionable swap when Democrat Robert Torricelli ran into ethical problems on the eve of the 2002 election and resigned the nomination 35 days from the election. The deadline for the Democrats to switch candidates had already expired, but the New Jersey Supreme Court allowed the party to swap Lautenberg in for the Torch, and Lautenberg won the seat. He had served ever since.

Gov. Chris Christie (R) will appoint Lautenberg’s successor.

So the big question is: will Christie actually appoint a Republican?

It will be a corrupt Leftist. The Party designation is immaterial, but it will be a corrupt Leftist. I am guessing Booker, but could be surprised. I am hearing reports that major Democrat donors are beating down Christie's door since this morning, which may be an indication. Second sure thing. Regardless of how the base is hacked off by the choice; the Institutional Republicans will praise Christie as a "true conservative.

Trick question. There are no Republicans in New Jersey. My parents moved out in the 1970s.

If he's a RINO like Christie, that will tell us a lot about Christie as well. Unless he appoints an actual conservative, he's toast in 2016, if he isn't already.

My bets are on the RINO.

All SENSIBLE bets are on a RINO being appointed, but I will not be the least bit surprised if he goes all out and appoints a Democrat. He'll say he's giving the people what they would have wanted.
