As I write, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton’s long-awaited testimony on the attack in Benghazi that killed four Americans is ongoing. In her opening statement, Clinton again said that she took “responsibility” without defining what that means. “Nobody is more committed to getting this right. I am determined to leave the State Department and our country safer, stronger, and more secure,” she said. “Taking responsibility meant moving quickly in those first uncertain hours and days to respond to the immediate crisis and further protect our people and posts in highthreat areas across the region and the world. It meant launching an independent investigation to determine exactly what happened in Benghazi and to recommend steps for improvement. And it meant intensifying our efforts to combat terrorism and support emerging democracies in North Africa and beyond.”
She went on to describe her actions that night. There were, she said, “No delays in decision-making. No denials of support from Washington or from the military. And I want to echo the Review Board’s praise for the valor and courage of our people on the ground – especially the security professionals in Benghazi and Tripoli. The Board said our response saved American lives in real time – and it did.” Fox and others have reported that there were denials of support from Washington that night.
Clinton’s voice broke when she spoke of the four Americans killed, and their surviving families. “For me, this is not just a matter of policy… it’s personal,” she said. “I stood next to President Obama as the Marines carried those flag-draped caskets off the plane at Andrews. I put my arms around the mothers and fathers, sisters and brothers, sons and daughters.”
According to one of those family members, Clinton promised to have a filmmaker arrested that day. And on that day, as she stood in front of those flag-draped caskets, she blamed a movie for the attack. The exact words she spoke on that day, September 14, 2012, are: “This has been a difficult week for the State Department and for our country. We’ve seen the heavy assault on our post in Benghazi that took the lives of those brave men. We’ve seen rage and violence directed at American embassies over an awful internet video that we had nothing to do with. It is hard for the American people to make sense of that because it is senseless, and it is totally unacceptable.”
She never once mentioned that movie during her opening statement today.

I won’t speak for “State Department Civil Service”, but some of the State Department FOREIGN SERVICE” do understand. Their analysis and comments are usually classified. Wikileaks actually showed that Foreign Service reporting was pretty accurate. Too bad that light is usually hidden under a bushel.
Correct. But people forget that the State Department is about diplomacy – keeping the peace and building bridges. This role can be exaggerated beyond the scope of reality, however. Diplomats may know the details – the facts on the ground – but the current administration doesn’t want to hear them. I think that’s true of many administrations. There were probably people at State who understood Vietnam pretty well. Nobody wanted to hear them, either. It’s all about high goals and public perception. When, like Obama, you’ve branded yourself as something new and different in American diplomacy and declared your enemies your friends, you de-emphasize anything that doesn’t look friendly.

There are survivors of the Benghazi attack, Americans flown to Germany for recovery. Congressmen who have tried to interview them have been stonewalled.
They are key to the truth, but as many have careers in government service, we may have to wait for the Democrats to leave the Executive branch to get the truth.
We don’t even know their identities. It is as if Congress were the enemy, and the Executive branch is hiding them, like in Argo.
I, too, have been astounded that we have heard NO testimony from any of the numerous other people who there when this all went down. One can only assume that they are being silenced by the Administration. Surely if their testimony supported the Administration’s “narrative” they’d be seen all over the place, on every MSM news program, constantly. The fact that the story is being played as if the four that were killed were the only people there that night seems very suspicious. I can believe that there was something very underhanded going on, even that the Administration was setting the Ambassador up to be kidnapped so he could be exchanged for the blind sheikh, and the plan went off the rails when the two CIA guys decided to ignore the stand down orders, and made the Islamist players think they had been double-crossed. #1) Why was Stevens even in Benghazi?
#2) Why was the CIA in Benghazi?
#3) Who called off military backup?

Yes, Bugs, you are correct. I just meant my statement to be more general. As I understand it, a number of those military “advisers” were heavily “engaged” (whatever that means) in the final assault; and it never was made clear who was doing the shooting from the chopper overhead – that supposedly killed a number of people who were trying to flee out the back when the fire started.
Congressional Republicans totally wimped out when it came to asking penetrating questions during the Waco hearings, and never even pressed the point as to whether or not any .50 cal (Barrett) rifles were actually found in the rubble.
Another point they never pressed was why Clinton and Reno did not order Koresh arrested during his frequent trips into town, when he could have been captured without incident by a couple ATF agents. It is believed Clinton and Reno deliberately wanted a serious military-type firefight to cower 2nd-Amendment advocates as to what would happen to them if they wanted a confrontation with authorities. And I haven’t even mentioned Ruby Ridge and its hearings.
