Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee (D-Texas) on Wednesday afternoon urged people to turn in their guns, arguing it would be an appropriate response to last week’s mass shooting in Newtown, Conn.
“I would personally just say to those who are listening, maybe you want to turn in your guns,” Jackson Lee said on the House floor. “Oh no, I’m not going to take your guns. But look at what Dick’s Sporting Goods did … they wanted to be part of the solution and part of America.”
So we’re not “part of America” if we choose to have a firearm, a right guaranteed in the Constitution? Noted. Thanks for clearing that up.

For those confused – in the original Greek, “molon labe” (what Charlie wrote in contemporary Greek font) is a bit of a dirty pun: to wit, inviting the listener to “grasp/grab” the speaker’s “shaft/haft” (presumptive of a spear, given the context). Youngsters may remember the film a couple years ago “The 300″; that story of the battle of Thermopylae is where this phrase comes from. And yes, it’s probably apocryphal, but no matter.
It’s a particularly elegant and defiant way of saying “pry my gun from my cold dead fingers” in a rather amusing and insulting way. Much like “code bloat”, language – particularly English, with it’s mish-mash of cultural and linguistic influences – has lost a lot of the elegance and subtlety – not to mention conciseness of presumed pronouns – of bygone eras.
Nevertheless, I have a bumper sticker with this phrase – in Greek – on my car. I have another 50 or so stickers waiting for my new cars as time goes on (hey, there was a 200 minimum on the order; I gave the rest away over the years).
I’ll make her a deal. Its an all American deal, as I want to be “part of America.” (Sorry I did not know she was the arbiter of such).
I will sell her guns at $5000.00 each as long as she uses her personal funds. She may then assuage her conscience with them any way she wishes.
Seing as she is an elected official, I’m sure she has plenty of plenty of slush-funds, illegal contributions, and money-making via ethically-challenged means to generate the cash.
I’m very sure I would run out of persoanl firearms long before she would run out of ill-gotten gains. Hmm, maybe I should raise the price to $10,000….college for the kids you know. With money to spare…for better guns (OOPS).

I’m not sure what Dick’s stopped selling. The last time I went to my local Dick’s, they had already stopped selling handguns. I think they might have had some semi-auto hunting rifles, but nothing that could be mistaken for an “assault rifle.” Plenty of shotguns and a couple of muzzle-loaders, if I recall correctly. So I guess that Dick’s is already in compliance with the new order of things.
What do you call someone who makes speeches proposing grandiose mass reactions to things – like suddenly everyone in the country is going to be ashamed and “turn in” all their guns? I mean, does someone like that really live in the real world? Mass movements, fundamental change, etc., etc. Who are these architects of progress looking to change the way the world works in one fell swoop? Who told them it was possible? Or are they just automatically spewing grand-sounding rhetoric?

I have a little Daisy BB gun to chase away birds (which I haven’t touched in several years). However, she can take a long walk on a short pier as far as I am concerned (given her absolute stupidity she probably won’t understand what I just wrote).
I was in Dick’s just yesterday (only second time in the store, new one in central Florida) and not only was there practically no ammo anywhere, there were no weapons anywhere but shot guns, and assistance was no where to be found. Their rifles announcement was it. I will not be going back. There are plenty of other sporting goods stores around here that cater to the entire sports area, not just the PC ones. I will continue to frequent those.

I called her congressional office and asked the very nice person who answered the phone if he passes through security to get to and from his job, and asked him if Washington, D.C. has stringent gun laws.

Ms Congressperson Lee grew up in NY, and migrated here to Houston after law school. I believe her first job — or one of the first –was as an attorney for the old United Gas Company here in Houston. I knew her slightly in that capacity. I would guess Ms Lee would rather not have that part of her resume emphasized given the circles she now travels in. You may note it is absent from her bio on Wikipedia. But one does not forget a character like Ms Lee.

The North and South unified as the Socialist Republic of Vietnam in 1976 and today finds a great deal of harmony, economic growth, etc.

Bryan — I won’t quibble over this matter except to say we travel to Vietnam every two years to sponsor students for some universities through our church. We are fortunate to have been able too sponsor the two families of my 1964-65-66 advisors, imigration to the U.S. I have a different view than some of the facts I supose. I would like to ask Ms Lee the following: In white America, the gun homicide rate is lower than that of any country in Europe, including all those countries with stringent gun control–a tiny .18 per 100,000, but in the community that elects you, black America, the gun homicide rate is 72 times that at 13 homicides per 100,000 per year, and this despite the fact that whites are twice as likely to report owning guns as are blacks, so my question is, what kind of failed leadership in the black community has led to such a catastrophe, and how does taking away the rifle of some suburban dad fix the problem?

I understand that the Americans of the esteemed representative’s district might be said by some as being ones not to trust with guns, not having the maturity to exercise such power, though I will not say so, for I am not sure I believe it, nor if I did would I advocate restricting the rights of all for the abuses of some, for in that way lies a principle tryanny can easily abuse. What I will say is that even if inability to handle mass citizen ownership of arms is a problem of the people of Ms. Jackson-Lee’s district, it is not true for the people of the nation as a whole, or of its several parts, and we will not live in a freedom-by-lowest-common-denominator Republic.

I agree Lee is arrogant, ignorant, and ugly but Vietnam today , for better or worse is one country. When did she say this ? Context ? What time period was she talking about ? Give us a link to that quote .
Though many of the older generations are dying off, there still remains what the old North and South refer to as an economic and cultrual divide much like China, with a strong agri economy beweeen the two. Ho Chi Minh City considers themselves in many respects as being what Taiwan is to China without very much political or social dissention between the two. Ho Chi Minh city is far more westernized and likewise, has far more governmental corruption and criminal mafia enterprises. A beautiful country and people if you ever have the chance to visit there don’t turn it down.

I read Lee’s comments on instapundit during my lunch break. After work I stopped at my local sporting goods store and shopped for a handgun. Haven’t decided what model but I will be borrowing some from my neighbor and son-in-law in the next couple of weeks to try out some different models. After that I will decided and make my purchase. My wife will also be joining me on this adventure. I also just finished joining the NRA online.
I’m an upland bird hunter and own two fine shotguns. I’ve shot handguns before but was never motivated to own one. I read a comment sometime ago about excercising your rights as a way to preserve them. Lee’s comments got me off my procrastinating butt and got me in gear. Thanks Sheila!

After 1945, the Allied Forces commanded the complete disarming of Germany. Even German police officers were initially not allowed to carry firearms. Private ownership of firearms was not allowed until after 1956. The legal status returned essentially to that of the Law on Firearms and Ammunition of 1928. The regulation of the matter was thoroughly revised in 1972, when the new restrictive Federal Weapons Act (Bundeswaffengesetz) became effective, partly as a reaction to the terror of the Red Army Faction. It was developed in the Federal Weapons Act of 2002 and by amendments in 2008 and 2009. These laws were the result of a chain of school shootings in Erfurt, Emsdetten and Winnenden. They led to a public debate, in which blame was attributed to various elements ofyouth culture and society, including violent computer games, television programs, rock music and private gun ownership.
The Weapons Act of 2002 increased the age requirements for licensed hunters and competition shooters. It also introduced the requirement of a psychological evaluation for persons under the age of 25 to fulfil the requirement of personal adequacy for large-bore firearms.
The first amendment became effective on April 1, 2008. The intention of that amendment was to ban certain kinds of weapons like airsoft-guns, tasers, so-called Anscheinswaffen (dummy-guns) and knives with blades longer than 12 cm from public places. They may still be carried in sealed wrappings and for professional or ceremonial purposes. Their use on private premises and in non-public places like gun clubs is not restricted.
The second amendment became effective on July 17, 2009. Itintroduced routine verifications of safe firearms storage by local firearms control offices at the homes of licensees. It also heightened the conditions for continuous necessity. A constitutional complaint (Verfassungsbeschwerde) was launched against the law, alleging a violation of the inviolability of the home, guaranteed by Art. 13 of theGerman constitution.

A firearms ownership license (Waffenbesitzkarte) must be obtained before a weapon can be purchased. Owners of multiple firearms need separate ownership licenses for every single firearm they own. It entitles owners to purchase firearms and handle them on their own property and any private property with property owner consent. On public premises, a licensed firearm must be transported unloaded and in a stable, fully enclosing, locked container. A weapons ownership license does not entitle the owner to shoot the weapon or carry it on public premises without the prescribed container. Owners
must obtain mandatory insurance and a means to securely store the weapon on their premises (a weapons locker). Blanket ownership licenses are issued to arms dealers, firearms experts and – with limitations – to collectors. Today,
there are ca. four million legal private gun owners.
A number of criteria must be met before a firearms ownership license is issued:
age of majority (18 years) (§ 4 WaffG)·
trustworthiness (§ 5 WaffG)·
personal adequacy (§ 6 WaffG)·
expert knowledge (§ 7 WaffG) and·
necessity (§ 8 WaffG)
Necessity is automatically assumed present for licensed hunters and owners of a carry permit (Waffenschein). Competition shooters can demonstrate necessity by being an active member of a Schützenverein (marksmen club) for over a year. A competition shooter can lose necessity – and be required to give up owned firearms – by abandoning the shooting sport. Self-defense is not a recognized ground for necessity, outside the narrow requirements of a carry permit.
Inheritors of legal firearms can obtain a permit without having to demonstrate expert knowledge or necessity, but without them, the firearm has to be blocked by an arms dealer (§ 20 WaffG) and an inheritor’s license does not include the right to acquire or handle ammunition.
Persons who are:
convicted felons·
have a record of mental disorder or·are deemed unreliable (which includes people with drug or alcohol addiction histories and known violent or aggressive persons)are barred from obtaining a firearms ownership license. (LNN12/20/12)

If the crime rate against Democrats doesn’t go up over say a 5 year period, then maybe we’ll talk about a few minor restrictions.
