We will never convince people like Detroit City Council Member JoAnn Watson that the federal government must spend less money. Never. Their sense of entitlement and grievance is too strong.
“After the election of Jimmy Carter, the honorable Coleman Alexander Young, he went to Washington, D.C. and came home with some bacon,” said Watson. “That’s what you do.”
—
“Our people in an overwhelming way supported the re-election of this president and there ought to be a quid pro quo and you ought to exercise leadership on that,” said Watson. “Of course, not just that, but why not?”
Why not? Because we don’t have the money. Because we’re running trillion dollar deficits every year. Because Detroit’s irresponsibility that stretches across decades of corruption should not force Des Moines or Dallas into paying for it.
Watch the video to see the councilwoman’s belief in the corrupt city’s entitlement, and hear many in the crowd murmur in support of her.

Obama phones for all, I say!
But wait! Aren’t these people living in a blue state, and we get told all the time that the red states are really just leeches taking from these poor, hard-working honest blue state folk. I’m sure that Detroit would be completely solvent if states like Texas would just pay their fair share and stop taking from Michigan. /sarc
They made their bed. Let them burn in it.
I wonder if she has children. And if so, does she still breast feed them, even if they are in their 20s or older? And if not, then why should Detroit the city be allowed to suck on the virtual Federal Government breast. Can Detroit grow up and be adults like humans are supposed to do? This is what the Democrats have created, and this is the future of our country because the GOP are too craven and cowardly to actually speak out (because they might be called racist).
When California decides to declare bankruptcy, you can bet they will come to DC with their hands out and we in Texas and other rational states will be forced to pay for it.
Welcome to Detroit Politics, Folks!
My state rep is an 8 time felon, and 74% of my fellow Wayne Countians voted for Obama. It has never been clearer to me that my vote does not count.
Transfat-free fried chicken for all!
Ladies and gentlemen: your conservative base.
Detroit built itself on products that were not reliable, then got defenestrated by the people in the 70s and 80s for doing so. If Detroit did not properly plan its economic affairs, and if its primary industry lost the monopoly it had on the American people, then it is the fault of those who live there, not anyone else.
The American people should not have bailed out the auto unions, and we surely should not have people elsewhere sacrifice themselves to maintain the folly of a city that cannot apparently govern itself.
Detroit got itself into this mess. It should get itself out. As a white male tired of being blamed for stuff I never did or thought of doing, I hope Barack Obama does not mind if we hold others accountable for that which they actually did do, and let others off the hook of paying for it.
This is legitimate grounds.
House Republicans need to pass a budget expressly forbidding the City of Detroit or Wayne County, Michigan from receiving a dime of federal money for anything. No Social Security, no Medicare/Medicaid, no Department of anything money.
Let Michigan deal with it.
Yes, let’s exclude the inner-city even more from government funding and give even more to the parasites of white suburbia.
Honestly confused as to how a single video of a single Detroit City Council Member proves anything.
If the comments to this post prove anything it’s that this is just more dog whistle bullshit from overprivileged crackers who read Drudge.
Tell you what, Andrew. If you are going to spew out drivel like “cracker” then you should not be surprised if similarly offensive terms are returned to you. I am strongly resisting the urge to throw a few nasty metaphors in your direction right now.
Andrew, you responded to a single snarky five word post with “Ladies and gentlemen: your conservative base.” But single video leaves you “honestly confused”.
So a five word post by a internet stranger defines an entire political ideology for you, and yet you are unable to fathom what might be defined with a video of an official statement by an elected official?
I don’t need to draw any conclusions about you. They are painfully obvious to anyone reading this, and they ought to be painfully obvious to you, too.
Wake up. The real scary thing about that video isn’t the request for money, politicians do that in their sleep. The truly frightening thing is the assumption of political “quid pro quo”, the idea that government benefits should flow from party loyalty. The terrifying thing is that an elected official felt perfectly comfortable stating this aloud, on camera, on record. The implications should have you, and every American, very worried. It is scarier, by far, than the things conservative politicians have said that have led to uproars.
Somebody should tell Council Member Watson that GM got Detroit’s bribe money, and a lot more besides. Tell her to go ask them for it. She and her constituants have already been paid off. No double billing!
