Take a look at this story about tonight’s presidential debate, which went live on NBC’s web site this morning.
With only 14 days until Election Day, President Barack Obama and Republican challenger Mitt Romney debate for the second time Tuesday in a town hall setting live from Hempstead, N.Y. We’ll carry the debate live on NBC News along with post-debate analysis and The Truth Squad, but you can also get the full debate experience away from the television.
Spot the error? NBC lost a week, as we’re currently 21 days away from the election (not counting today), not 14. The network was off by 33% — in basic counting.
Yesterday, as the Red Bull Stratos guy fell from 24 miles up, MSNBC aired this graphic that had even the reprehensible Gawker mocking them.
Light travels at approximately 186,000 miles per second. “Fearless Felix” fell 24 miles, so if he really broke light speed, his fall would have been a very quick swoosh-SPLAT instead of the more than four minute freefall that actually happened. Besides you can’t travel at light speed without encountering crazy relativistic effects.
“Fearless Felix” actually traveled faster than the speed of sound, which is about 768 miles per hour. That’s fast, but nowhere near the speed of light.
Who gets jobs in legacy media these days? Do they teach anything but “social justice” and how to screw over Republicans in j-school these days?

this is the exact outcome of the new-age “math and science” peddled in the indoctrination factories, er, public school system
Come on, we know Adrea Mitchell (married to the former head of the Federal Reserve!) meant “time.” Felix traveled faster than time.
All those fact checkers and editors are too busy conspiring to distort news, they don’t know how to treat a story that has no socialist spin whatsoever.
Maybe they ought to pay attention to this guy:

Thanks, cfbleachers. That ad is GREAT.
Maybe this incompetence explains how NBC left out a critical part of the Zimmerman communication with the police, or maybe NBC was just playing fast and loose with the facts. Either way, NBC can’t be trusted.
Of course they do ! They teach you the geography of all 57 states, and you can learn to translate from Austrian.
Students come from all over the world, even from the Argentinian Maldives.
Then they bury your records, so your privacy will be protected forever and ever.
They checked with their pollsters to find out how many days until the election.
Next thing you know, MSNBC will be saying someone went straight to plaid.
“You didn’t tell us there would be maaaaaaaath!”
Pointing out a math or science error to a journalist is racist, and probably sexist as well. After Obama’s re-election, off to the reeducation camps for you!
They should have played “The Final Countdown.” It refers to traveling to Venus from earth taking so many light years. Europe math..
Nothing travels faster than stupidity . . . MSNBC is in full warp drive.
“Fearless Felix” actually traveled faster than the speed of sound, which is about 768 miles per hour. That’s fast, but nowhere near the speed of light.
That’s the speed of sound at sea level. The speed of sound varies with temperature. At the altitude and temperature when Felix broke Mach 1, the speed of sound was about 670-690 MPH. He’s estimated to have hit about 844 MPH or Mach 1.24. While that’s only about 0.000075 of the speed of light, that’s still pretty damned fast, roughly the top speed of the F-100 Super Sabre or T-38 Talon.
You can’t travel faster than the speed of light period. And not because of “crazy relativistic effects.” In fact, your GPS only works because it can correct for the relativistic effects of radio waves traveling at the speed of light and of the satellites traveling at approximately 8,600 mph.
If “Fearless Felix” broke (or even approached) the speed of light – the result would not be a “splat”, but a big bang.
The kinetic energy of 80 kg (?) travelling at 3 x 10**8 m/sec would be 3.6 x 10**18 joules – about equal to an 800 megaton nuclear bomb.
In my experience, most journalists are former English majors who lack the intellect to understand math or science.
