Here’s BuzzFeed’s headline on a little story that happened today:
Paul Ryan Gets Testy And Ends Interview
Here’s the video. BuzzFeed got a couple of things wrong. One – Ryan isn’t “testy.”Two – Ryan didn’t end the interview. Someone off camera did that. Other than that, BuzzFeed and Mediate’s reporting are OK, I guess.
Bonus: The reporter’s question was strange, as Ryan said. The interview was about reducing crime, and Ryan offered up some solutions including bringing economic opportunity to inner city neighborhoods where crime is rampant. After a few questions about guns, the reporter tries a curve and asks Ryan if it’s possible to “do all that while* cutting taxes.” It was an odd non sequitur but it didn’t throw Ryan off or make him angry.
* The reporter actually said “by cutting taxes.” Which is stupid, and something Ryan has never said.

– doesn’t go as you planned, just say that it did, anyway. Right, Andrea Greenspan?
G.D.! The questioner is a genius! Why didn’t someone ever think of trying that before! We can….throw *money* at the inner cities, and solve ALL their problems! it is so simple–I wonder why no one ever tried it before? Genius!
That tears it. I’m voting Democrat now.
Or midnight basketball. That does it, I’m making an illegal donation to Obama!
“cutting taxes” (reality: preventing taxes from increasing).. yes that is one way to encourage economic development overall. Economic development that would reach the inner cities as small businesses would be more likely to succeed. Then Ryan could segue into talking about strangulation level regulations that halt growth and discourage startups.
Ryan could have rolled with the question.
Am I rite?
Imagine the scale of marxist victories if those damn capitalists hadn’t invented video.
It’s stranger than “while cutting taxes”. Sounds like he said “you’re gonna do all that BY cutting taxes.” Silly. One of those hacks that makes a career out of partisanship.
Safe to say the reporter was in a little over his head. He didn’t even try to set it up – just barreled right ahead with the first thought careening through his little skull when time was short.
Mr. Preston, you really DO need to correct your misquote prominently — ASAP and in the original post text. There IS indeed a significant difference (in aggressive stupidity) between addressing crime “while” cutting taxes and “by” cutting taxes!
Yup. Fixed.
Ummmm, am I missing something?! He did ask, “and you can do all that BY cutting taxes…with a big tax cut?” That IS what he said. He did NOT say WHILE cutting taxes.
Strange question for Terry Camp: “If you spent some time with Barack Obama, would you spit or swallow?”
That’s some good comedy.
Beldar is exactly right. The interviewer said “by cutting taxes”, which is “indeed a significant difference (in aggressive stupidity)”.
jack kemp lives on through paul ryan…i have a good feeling about the debate after watching this video.
Ryan did get testy but it was after the interview had concluded. I think it’s likely that someone on his staff could sense what was about to happen and stopped it – that’s good staff.
It’s a little disappointing. Ryan should have a stock answer whenever asked about tax “cuts:” our plan doesn’t cut taxes, it reforms them, and the reform is specifically designed to be revenue neutral.
Then in this specific case he should have added, yes, our tax reform plan will create growth but we’ll also do it with fiscal and regulatory reform. Our plans will reverse the slide in median income that The Dog Eater’s policies have caused.
It’s the desperation of the media as their Dear Leader is going down in flames after they’ve invested so much time and all their credibility in propping up him and his campaign.
RealClearPolitics is running with the erroneous “testy and ended” meme too… even while linking the video that proves no such happened.
Honest reportage… they ain’t.
You have to understand, they toss these headlines out knowing Drudge will see it and link to them. Buzzfeed says their traffic has exploded in the last year, gee I wonder why, they’re on the drudgereport every damn day
that’s why I love the Internet. I clicked on it on Drudge, watched the video myself and came to the same conclusions: did not “walk out of the interview”, did not “become testy”, did not back down to an obvious dishonest moment in an interview but rather confronted the interviewer and his technique in a manner that one might describe as direct, measured and without unnecessary, irrelevant personal disparagement. Quite the foil to the immature prattle one gets from the other side.
It sounds like the producer behind the camera ended the interview at the precise time he knew the reporter was souring it. But the cameraman kept rolling to catch Ryan gently, and with great civility, ripping the reporter a new one. It made me smile.
A test drive on the meme to follow the Ryan/Biden debate. Wait and see – they’ll trot this out again and say that Ryan fellow is intemperate and a hothead. Look for amiable “Joe” to try and tick off Ryan, that or the moderator. RCP was bought out in 2007 by Forbes Media. And I mean ‘bought out’. Why do you think they continue to include easily disputed polls to show a closer race. Prior to 2007, they were far more reliable, now, not so much.
OTOH, the juxtaposition of the young and vibrant Ryan vs. the doddering old fool may make for poor optics since most of us have long ago given up on an intelligent thought passing Biden’s lips, and can understand that our nation’s prosperity may mean that we can no longer suffer fools in positions of power.
The reporter just wanted to put Ryan on the defensive with a clumsy non sequitur. Ryan should be ready for that against Biden, where the debate won’t be cut short regardless of what Biden says (I’m so looking forward to this). He has to be able to hit back those pitches at his head.
