The Democratic National Convention opened this evening with a vote to update this year’s party platform to add God and Jerusalem back into the document.
Former Ohio Gov. Ted Strickland, citing his past as a Methodist pastor, offered the amendments to the platform after Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, chairman of the convention, gaveled in the session.
Villaraigosa needed a two-thirds voice vote to adopt the amendments, and asked for votes three times before deciding that the yeas had it. The mayor looked flustered after the second vote and was given advice by a woman who walked onstage before calling for the third vote.
The yeas and the nays gave equally loud shouts of their votes. Boos were heard in the hall on the adoption of the amendments.
The first amendment says that the government should help people “make the most of their God-given potential,” and the second says “Jerusalem is and will remain the capital of Israel.”
“This is a huge embarrassment and it exposes where rank and file Ds are on support for Israel,” tweeted former White House Press Secretary Ari Fleischer. “A railroad just passed thru the floor of the D convention. No way was that a 2/3rd vote.”
“Thank God, literally, that Ted Strickland repaired the damage from oversights in Dem platform,” Democratic strategist Paul Begala tweeted.
Well, Jerusalem may be fooled.
But God heard the boos.
The Democrats booed God.
And/or Jerusalem.
Play that clip every day for the next nine weeks of the booing.
They got it wrong in the first place…and then REALLY got it wrong by exposing the truth. Those boos showed the intent, there was no “mistake” leaving them both out in the original.
Obama will still get the Jewish vote. This did the Democrats no harm.

Next up at the convention: a black congressman invoking God. I think the booing God thing will hurt Dems with their church-going black base, who are already peeved about the gay marriage thing….. No matter what you think about the issues (Jerusalem, God) it looks like a huge screw-up in terms of presentation. I know one group of people who are really, really, going to be angry about this, and that’s the Jews in America. But I agree with the move to put the word “god” in the platform, which will make some of the less intelligent people out there feel a bit better. Once everything is in place, we’ll just re-educate them anyway. We’ll deal with them. There, I said it, but it doesn’t matter because at least 50% of the public is in our camp….50%…..think about that! 50%….50%.
So, if one hypothetically agrees that your position is right, why cram it down the Democratic delegates’ throats? The way this was done was just as bad as how some people view the content of it. When a voice vote is unclear, someone in the assembly calls for the assembly to divide up into two groups, one for, one against. Sometimes the two groups move to separate areas of the assembly hall so the chair can gauge the size of the respective groups. He has used “executive orders” to circumvent the will (and won’t) of the Congress when he hasn’t got his way, so why not do the same at the Convention by ignoring the failure to get the required super majority by voice vote and “deem” the platform change passed?

Hannity just reported that the “Yeas have it” was already in the teleprompter prior to the final vote. It was pre-planned but the boos from the floor had them flumoxed.
Apparently Mr. O was annoyed about the agitas surrounding the Dems excision of God and Jerusalem and ordered his minions to put them back in.

why should we be surprised at the chair’s call, the powers that be had realized how offensive this slip up was and needed to correct it on paper so they would not risk losing votes over their “Truth”. This mystery is easily solved by understanding ‘The Chair’. Look closely at the video. Each and everyone of those numerous seemingly empty seats was actually occupied by an invisible Obama clone. Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, chairman of the convention had some difficulty at first channeling the ethereal voices of those chairs but eventually heard their overwhelming ayes; even if no-one else (other than Nancy Pelosi) did.
They have managed to remove the ethics sessions in the Military that were based, they said, on “christian” ethics as offensive. I believe they tried this Man as the giver of all things to the citizens after the french Revolution. It did not work in sooo many ways . Blood ran in the streets, the Guillotine reigned supreme. It was rule of the mob over law. In our world experience both Socialist and Fascistic revolutions descend into murder and blood. Neither one respects the rule of laws conceived in wisdom. Only laws of expediency and when they can’t get their way. They simply write their own and bypass the unwanted rules.
Just like the spin on limiting campaign crowds, not raising enough funds, not filling the stadium, the spin on this tomorrow will be “Yeah, we meant to do that”. Just to show you how the democratic process works. Don’t you want the power of such decisive decision making working for you? Together, the government will own you and we can make this a better world for the middle class, blah, blah, blah….

If they would have voted separately on both amendments, #2 Jerusalem as the capital of Israel would not have passed.
Go check the number of comments on this issue on the Huffington Post that state that God has no place in their platform. While I think God would not have been rejected as soundly, both would have failed to gather 2/3rds.
