Schumer's Dig: Dems Aren't Ashamed of Our Past Presidents

Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) got in a dig at President Bush and the RNC while lauding President Clinton’s appearance tonight at the Democratic National Convention.

“It’s no accident that Democrats celebrate our past presidents while Republicans practically banished theirs,” the senator said.

Referencing Mitt Romney’s CPAC speech during the primaries in which he called himself a “severely conservative Republican,” Schumer said “some say Romney would repeat the past; I disagree — he’d be worse.”

“When Mitt Romney says he wants to reform the tax code, hold on to your wallets,” he said, quipping that Romney’s “new favorite tax haven is Paul Ryan’s budget.” Schumer claimed that under Ryan’s “Path to Prosperity,” “Romney’s taxes would drop almost to zero.”

“We can’t afford a president with such a narrow perspective,” Schumer charged, adding that Romney’s “rarefied” life led to the “insidious narrowness of his experience, perspective and vision.”
