Campaign of Admitted Cocaine User Accuses Romney of a Felony

Stephanie Cutter, Obama campaign spokesperson, went there today, using the already discredited plagiarized Boston Globe story to suggest that Mitt Romney committed a felony.

In a conference call with reporters this morning, the Obama campaign focused on this morning’s Boston Globe story arguing that Mitt Romney remained at Bain through 2002. The Romney campaign has called the story “not accurate.”

“Either Mitt Romney, through his own words and his own signature, was misrepresenting his position at Bain to the SEC, which is a felony, or he was misrepresenting his position at Bain to the American people to avoid responsibility for some of the consequences of his investment,” Obama deputy campaign manager Stephanie Cutter asserted.

“If he was lying to the American people,” she added. “then that’s a real character and trust issue that the American people need to take very seriously.”

Both the Washington Post and FactCheck.org are on the record standing by their own reporting on Romney’s time at Bain, and therefore against the Globe’s stolen story. Yet the Obama campaign is pushing full bore on the, as I’ve noted, already discredited and purloined piece. That says quite a bit about their own character.

If they want to talk about candidates and felonies, that’s a conversation that the Romney campaign may be happy to have introduced.

Obama, by all accounts, was a habitual drug user in high school. He tried cocaine, he admits in Dreams From My Father; he “tried drugs enthusiastically.” The Chicago Tribune reported back in 2007 that Obama thanked the “Choom Gang” in his high school yearbook; “chooming” was Hawaiian slang for smoking pot. The Honolulu Advertiser reported that Obama’s senior portrait “prominently displayed … A package of ‘Zig-Zag’ rolling papers and a matchbook.” One of Obama’s close friends was arrested for drug possession during high school.

In his memoir, Obama talked about routinely getting high. “Junkie. Pothead,” he wrote. “That’s where I’d been headed: the final, fatal role of the young would-be black man.” But, according to Obama, he only got high because he was contemplating deep matters: drugs could “push questions of who I was out of my mind.”

He went from a goof-off high school junkie to the Ivy League. How?

The Globe’s story is looking more and more like an ill-conceived attack coordinated by the newpaper itself and its leftist blog sources, the Jimmy Carter appointee quoted in the story, and the Obama campaign. That the campaign may be launching such attacks now, when most voters aren’t even paying attention, suggests a deep desperation to change the subject from the miserable economy and Obama’s responsibility for that.
