According to several reports in the Arabic media, prominent Muslim clerics have begun to call for the demolition of Egypt’s Great Pyramids—or, in the words of Saudi Sheikh Ali bin Said al-Rabi’i, those “symbols of paganism,” which Egypt’s Salafi party has long planned to cover with wax. Most recently, Bahrain’s “Sheikh of Sunni Sheikhs” and President of National Unity, Abd al-Latif al-Mahmoud, called on Egypt’s new president, Muhammad Morsi, to “destroy the Pyramids and accomplish what the Amr bin al-As could not.”

This is a reference to the Muslim Prophet Muhammad’s companion, Amr bin al-As and his Arabian tribesmen, who invaded and conquered Egypt circa 641. Under al-As and subsequent Muslim rule, many Egyptian antiquities were destroyed as relics of infidelity. While most Western academics argue otherwise, according to early Muslim writers, the great Library of Alexandria itself—deemed a repository of pagan knowledge contradicting the Koran—was destroyed under bin al-As’s reign and incompliance with Caliph Omar’s command.
However, while book-burning was an easy activity in the 7th century, destroying the mountain-like pyramids and their guardian Sphinx was not—even if Egypt’s Medieval Mamluk rulers “de-nosed” the latter during target practice (though popular legend naturally attributes it to a Westerner, Napoleon).
Now, however, as Bahrain’s “Sheikh of Sheikhs” observes, and thanks to modern technology, the pyramidscan be destroyed. The only question left is whether Egypt’s Muslim Brotherhood president is “pious” enough—if he is willing to complete the Islamization process that started under the hands of Egypt’s first Islamic conqueror.

It says it all. Why, according to the article, did they destroy the library of Alexandria; to get rid of history that contradicts Islam. Destroying the pyramids would get rid of a little bit of Jewish history as well. It is a fake religion with a fake history so they have to rewrite it.
For all the crying and gnashing of teeth over Colonialism they never destroyed the history of the countries they took over. They left it in tact. They simply said ‘we have something better’; rule of law and Christianity. You can debate, if you like, whether or not what the Colonialists brought them was better or worse, but they didn’t feel the need to rewrite history.

Egypt’s economy is based on tourism. Tourism is based upon visitors wanting to see ancient Egyptian artifacts and structures. Destroy the antiquities and you destroy the tourism industry that is Egypt’s lifeblood.
Without tourism, Egypt is only a step away from a stone age society like that in Somalia.
Is the average Egyptian really that insane? Do they really want to lower their standard of living further in the name of religion?
Unfortunately, the answer may be yes…..
The next question is whether or not the Generals will allow such insanity to proceed. They like their bread and butter as much as the next guy, and I doubt they have any reservations about being seen as the bad guys as they crush fundamentalist fanatics crawling up the pyramids with dynamite clenched in their teeth.
I suspect they would rather remain the power behind the throne, and they would want that throne to be as prosperous as possible.
Still, if they go through with this destruction then at least the entire world can see them for what they are and act accordingly – at least the ones that are not so openmindedly liberal that they cannot even bring themselves to pick a side.
Hmmm … I can see elements of the Moslem Brotherhood extorting payments from the Western world in exchange for them not to blow up the Pyramids and other monuments. And I can imagine horrified Egyptologists and historians clamoring for the monuments and relics to be saved, by any bloodless means neccessary. The relics of Ancient Egypt are essentially hostage – especially the ones too large to be moved.
We’re Americans: we can do anything. Even Europeans moved Abu Simbel stone by stone. The Pyramids would look good in Nevada. The Temple at Luxor would make a nice car wash entrance and the Sphinx could go to Mall of America.

Have the Rosetta Stone and Cleopatra’s Obelisk been returned to Egypt yet? I know there was some talk about doing so. It will be a major irony if the only surviving relics of Egypt’s antiquity are the ones “looted” by the West.
There are over 100 pyramids in Egypt. The Great Pyramid of Giza along contains 6 million tons of material. These clowns may deface something, but they surely can’t be serious about tearing even 1 pyramid down.
Maybe they don’t have to tear it down. Wouldn’t it be enough to blow a hole through it? Weaken the foundation or blow off the top and let nature take its course. They didn’t pulverize the Buddhas, either. Sort of like the twin towers. It wasn’t enough to just hit them with a jumbo jet. We had to wait for the steel supports to weaken before the buildings came down.
That they would even consider doing this should bring the world down upon them. That it isn’t is proof of just how far gone we are.
How is what they are threatening to do any less than a crime against humanity?
They should keep talking – perhaps they’ll lose whatever tentative hold they have on the gov’t. The Egyptians are proud of their heritage – to attack the pyramids will be the kiss of death for them. Egypt is not Afghanistan.
