More Anti-Semitism at Occupy Los Angeles
While there have been intense arguments in the media recently about hints of anti-Semitism which have erupted at New York’s Occupy Wall Street protest, very little attention has been paid to similar problems cropping up at other “Occupy” events around the country.
Below you will find some photographs and a video taken at the Occupy Los Angeles encampment which reveal how there is a growing encroachment of anti-Semitic “Jewish bankers” conspiracy theories becoming more and more evident at these events. Obviously not everyone at the “Occupy” protests is an anti-Semite, but the fact that these statements and views fit so neatly into the whole anti-banker milieu, and often go completely unchallenged by fellow protesters, should give everyone cause for concern about where this whole movement is heading.
The first four pictures show the signs close up. The second four pictures show the same signs in context as they appeared at the Occupy Los Angeles protest, to prove beyond any doubt that these are authentic. Below them is a video of an Occupy Los Angeles speaker spinning more conspiracy theories.

First, at Occupy Los Angeles:
“End the Fed. Turn off the spigot!!!”, with an illustration showing Stars of David (containing the word “Zion”), missiles, and dollar signs, implying either that Jewish influence in the Federal government is what causes war funding, or that Jews pressure the government to send military aid to Israel, or both.
“Bizarre and incredible as it sounds, humanity has been colonized by a satanic cult called the ILLUMINATI…This cult represents Masonic and Jewish bankers who finagled a monopoly over government credit which allows them to charge interest on funds they create out of nothing. Thus, the people who control our purse strings are conspiring against us…They have orchestrated TWO WORLD WARS and are planning a THIRD.”
This ancient stereotype of the evil and greedy “Jewish bankers” is the precursor to the “greedy Wall Street bankers” so hated by the Occupiers.
“It’s Yom Kippur: Banks should atone!” Hmmmm…why would the banks and bankers engage in a Jewish ritual practice (atonement on Yom Kippur) if they weren’t Jewish? Again, we return to the “Jewish bankers” theme.
UPDATE: Turns out this particular sign is being held by a Jewish protester, so its intent was probably not meant to be anti-Semitic — though it could easily be misinterpreted, and as such was very ill-considered. The sign-holder is in no way visible in the photo, so their gender/age/religion/name was unknown to me. I did not identify the sign-holder in the caption nor depict them in a photo, and out of respect will continue refraining from doing so.
“Humanity vs. the Rothschlds” [sic -- he means "Rothschilds.]
In earlier centuries up through WWII, anti-Semitic “Jewish banker” conspiracy theories frequently focused on the Rothschilds, a prominent European Jewish family which owned many financial institutions.
Speaking of the Rothschilds conspiracy theories, and the belief that the Jews “funded WWII,” this video by Ringo of a speaker at the Occupy L.A. protest shows that the anti-Semitism is creeping into standard anti-capitalist speeches:

Occupy Los Angeles protester: “Patricia McAllister, I’m here representing myself but I do work for the Los Angeles Unified School District. I think that the Zionist Jews who are running these big banks and our Federal Reserve — which is not run by the federal government — they need to be run out of this country.”

First up is the now-infamous “Lotion Man,” arguing with a Jewish passerby:

My father worked 40 years, and we have a foreclosed house, my mother’s dead, she had a heart attack from stress. You tell the corporations to stop calling my mother.”

I’m in the Local 1 Plumbers’ Union. Who are you to tell me I need a job? Look at you, you short little man. Go away. I don’t wanna argue. Bye! Keep it moving. Occupy Wall Street, Occupy Wall Street.”
Also note that the person who took the video said (about Lotion Man’s statement that he too is Jewish) “By the way, during the course of his performance, he told me that he was white, Puerto Rican, Jewish, and African-American.”
Next up is a guy who’s been standing at the protest for weeks, holding up blatantly anti-Semitic signs and ranting about Jews, to the consternation of Jews in the vicinity:
“Blame the Jews.”
That’s the message one Wall Street protester was trying to spread in Lower Manhattan to anyone that would listen.
A new video posted to YouTube shows the protester loudly and aggressively proclaiming “the Jews control Wall Street.”
In the nearly 6-minute video, the man is seen standing in Zuccotti Park ranting against Israel and Jews while holding a sign reading “Hitler’s Bankers – Wall St.”
The protestor, who would not give his name to those gathered around him, is also seen arguing with members of the public who took offense to his choice of words.
A number of others also ask the protester if Fox News had paid him to stand and display his sign to which he responded: “[expletive] Fox News, that’s [expletive]. [Expletive] Jew made that up.”

The Occupiers, completely unable to accept that their arguments have attracted kooks with similar and overlapping beliefs, begin to formulate their own ridiculous conspiracy theory that he is an agent hired by Fox News — as you will see in this transcript, starting at 1:30:

The interviewer wrote an article on The Blaze to accompany these videos, in which he also includes an interview with a “non-leader” of the Occupy Wall Street group saying the the anti-Semite doesn’t represent the rest of the protesters.

This article in the Chabad Lubavitch Headquarters News discusses how some observant Jews at the New York Occupy Wall Street protest are becoming increasingly upset at the incipient anti-Semitism in the protest messages, and are trying to counter it:
Daniel Sieradski, a new media activist and participant in the protests, says he is reaching out to Jewish participants at the protest.
Sieradski has also found a small, fringe element that has “chosen to co-opt the protests as an opportunity” to spread hatred and anti-Semitic rhetoric, among participants, and hopes to dispel negative Jewish stereotypes and to “fight those using Jew-hatred,” by his presence there.
Leftists at the protest are hyper-senstitive to accusations of anti-Semitism, and have struck back with counterattacks.
This article in New Voices, the National Jewish Student Magazine, downplays the sign-holder as “the entire anti-Semite community of the Occupy Wall Street protest,” claiming there are no other anti-Semites there.
And the left-leaning pro-Occupy PoliticsUSA site published articles entitled Nazi Obsessed Fox News Attacks Occupy Wall Street As Anti-Semitic and A Terrified Rush Limbaugh Mines the Gutter Of Anti-Semitism To Attack the 99% which go to great lengths to dismiss the charges of anti-Semitism.
But with the emergence of the new evidence from Los Angeles presented above, the charges are getting harder to ignore.
My theory: They direct their anger at the Jews because they believe the Jewish banker conspracy. They seem to be the same people that believe 911 was an inside job.

It’s especially tiring in the Jewish community when leveraged against Jews who say something remotely critical about Israel. You make a good point. I believe that if any closet Jew-hater really checks the facts regarding the Rothschilds, they may find that the original Rothschilds were German-Jews and that was long ago. There is actually no Rothschild family anymore, it is a banking consortium of astute bankers representing most Judeo-Christian religions. While I agree this is old stuff. I think it is more helpful not to say or think of oppressed groups like gays, jews, people of color, as being homophobic, anti-Jewish (more precise than semitic like Arab peoples) or racist, but instead as having absorbed and internalized the oppression all around us and our group. There is a real difference between those targeted for oppression and outside groups doing the targeting. White/anglo people can be racist, not latino, black people etc. who are absorbing the attacks and carrying the beliefs forced on them, however subtly or overtly. Likewise Jews and gays cannot be anti-Jewish or homophobic. Its important to differentiate because oppressors within majority groups use these charges to justify and continue the attacks that dehumanize, and victims of these attacks find it difficult to think and work their way out of the feelings and beliefs that hurt them and hold them back from knowing their own self-worth. When I grew up, WWII was everywhere. It was in our language, on our TVs, Radios, Books and Movies. WWII was always on the American mind. Everyone had family members who had fought. To make it more prevalent in my life, I grew up on a small farm adjacent to an abandoned Army base where German prisoners had been kept. Prominently featured in this WWII consciousness was the Holocaust. It seemed to me then that Anti-Semitism had been so murderously ugly and evil, and so exposed to the light of day, that it was impossible for it to ever happen again. How naive I was.
It is sinking in now, with some difficulty, that it very well could happen again. And worse, it could happen here. My mind just doesnt want to accept that ugly truth. There will be a great difference this time. The millions of bitter-clingers such as myself will not stand by passively as the citizens of Germany did.

I very much doubt this. There might be 100 million Americans who truly believe abortion (just an illustrative example) is murder, yet they won’t do anything to stop it, except for complaining when they are granted permission to do so. At best, most people would just politely apologize with minimal eye contact while leading the various victims of choice onto their high speed rail. Americans are a very peaceful people, yet also very submissive to a great fault. Just like Germany was.
The battle for the heart of the West can only be won in elite law schools. There is no physical power in the world that could ever stop America short of nuclear war, not even the overhyped Chinese. The average citizen simply isn’t willing to defy a democratically elected leader, no matter how tyrannous. There’s a reason why the world was more civilized when monarchies were the norm, and why the Arab Spring has turned the region into hell.
Maybe the best hope is that the *idea* of America, and Israel, and the West, somehow manage to survive past their falls. Like Rome.

The protesters are funding the demonstrations? I didn’t know that. From what I heard, they are all talking about ‘the free food’ and aren’t paying for it. And they aren’t paying for the park. Are they paying to clean up the park or does the taxpayer have to pay for that? What about the extra police? Are they paying for that as well?

I’m sure you can’t mean that 40% of the govt’s tax income comes from 10% of the citizens, the wealthy…while 47% of US citizens pay NO income taxes at all. Yet, they get to vote and speak out. Hmm.
You say that the protests are going to a ‘direct democracy’. Could you explain this? You surely can’t mean a system where all 333 million US citizens must vote on each and every issue; that would mean that no decisions, ever, could be arrived at. It’s psychologically impossible for that many people to agree. It’s been shown that the largest group capable of such is about 30 people. And if you mean that these multimillion citizens must all vote, and the majority decision wins – then, can you be assured that all who vote are fully informed about the issues? Do you want decisions made by people who haven’t a clue about the issues and who vote based on emotions or pressure?
Now, your final comment is about ‘pro-compassion’, which is a strange idea. I’ve never come across anyone who is ‘anti-compassion’. You are either compassionate or not compassionate. Period. Now, what the heck does compassion have to do with an economy or bank? No, don’t try the ‘give money to that poor person’. That’s not an economic issues; that’s a social issue.

I understated my data. The top 1% of income earners in the US earn 19% of total income earned in the US and pay 37% of income taxes.
The tope 10% earn 33% of income and pay 57% of income taxes. So, the wealthy earn the most and pay, not simply a proportionate amount but a ratio far, far in excess of their earnings.
And remember, 47% and more pay no income taxes at all. Nothing. Yet they expect to receive all the services of the federal govt. Hmmm.
The top 1% earns over 30% of the nation’s wealth. The wealthiest 10% also gets >30% of the nation’s wealth. The poorest 90% gets about 26% of the nation’s wealth, from what I remember. Get your facts straight.

ETAB and dbstpkng are both right. ETAB is citing data for income and dbstpkng is citing wealth. Income measures how much a person makes in a year (and also does not measure some major sources of money, such as capital gains). Wealth measures a person’s total assets.
First of all, “direct democracy” is an insanely stupid and dangerous idea, especially since it does not lead to actual democracy, but flames out quickly and violently and is replaced by brutal repression.

I completely agree Zombie. Iran hails the Occupy America movement as a spearhead of their effort to destroy capitalism and its injustices. They sure as hell didn’t say that about the Tea Party. If people can’t see the connection and separate what a community organizer’s dream to re-elect Obama from real anger over corporate favoritism, they’re drinking too much Kool Aid. Of course people are angry at Wall Street and the loopholes. I am, but to ignore the pernicious elements in this movement is likely to produce the same disaster we witnessed in Egypt when that movement was intentionally mischaracterized by the media. They’re at it again. The rally cry is STOP HOARDING OF MONEY BY THE RICH? They demand the rich transfer their profits to the not-so-rich. Here’s what I don’t understand, despite a number of graduate level courses in the general area of racism and ethnic differences: Why do people hate Jews? I know many people always have, but it is hard to comprehend because they hate them for all the wrong reasons. It’s understandable to me why Caucasians may hate Negroes and vice versa, or any people of perceivable differences hating those with whom they differ, but why Jews, and why for so many years? Unless one visits a Synagogue, or a community of Hassadic Jews, Jews are no more discernable than any other Caucasian, or in some cases a middle-easterner.
I’ve heard all kinds of explanations for prejudice and bigotry directed at Jews, but none ever made any sense to me.
The people shown in the pictures and films above likely don’t know why they are holding those signs themselves. We know that most of them are paid protesters, and likely don’t care what their signs say. One would think, though, that there would be some things people would not do for money. But clearly I’m wrong about that.
In Medieval times, Jews were the only ones who would lend money — at interest rates. Borrowers hated that, as they believed the Bible forbade charging interest. Monarchs especially hated it. So you’ve got a small group of people doing something you don’t like, and you’re the king. Presto, have a pogrom against them and your interest (and your principal) don’t have to be paid back. Look at a lot of these protestors — they willfully went out and borrowed a bunch of money, in useless studies, and now don’t want to have honor their contracts.
Plus Jews tend to be successful, and if you see someone different who’s successful, and you’re not, it can breed resentment (rather than you working harder.) Jews get to be the scapegoat for why someone’s not successful.
THe only reason Jews lent money in Medieval times was that that was the only profession they were allowed to do. They were banned from virtually all trades and were forbidden from owning land.
So of course when someone had to hock something and borrow money, the grumbled about having to grovel to the money-grubbing Yids.

Jews didn’t choose the profession of “money-lender” of their own free will — they were forced into it, specifically because it was the most hated profession.
By the inevitable forces of market evolution, some will be better at it than others, and some will succeed more, and those successful ones grew over the centuries into what we now call “banks.” Hence the ancient European association of Jews with banks, even though 99% of modern banks are massive corporations not associated with any ethnicity and instead are controlled by public shareholders.

Monarchs needed money, and if they tried to tax their nobles enough, they might suddenly find themselves no longer a monarch and quite possibly dead. Jewish moneylenders were convenient. They could borrow money from the moneylenders even though they despised them as Jews. And if they had trouble paying the loans off, well, it was time for a pogrom!
For the moneylenders themselves, it was like the old story of the crooked craps game. “I know he throws loaded dice, but it’s the only game in town.”
Now, moneylending was not only a Jewish practice; some Catholic orders had been allowed to maintain banks and lend money. The Knights Templar (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Knights_Templar) had a large banking system, but they lost influence after the Holy Land was lost. King Phillip IV of France owed them a lot of money. When the Templars were politically weak, he and others accused them of heresy and idolatry; burnings at the stake ensued.
We’ll never know how much of anti-Semitism is purely religious hatred, and how much is political opportunism. Does it matter?
Incidentally, there were Rabbis in the Talmudic era who argued that lending for interest to the non-Jewish community was a dangerous practice. Meanwhile, others discovered interpretations of the Law to make it possible for lending within the Jewish community. It’s a little similar to Islamic sharia-compliant banking, but it came first.

The fact was that there was a time in history when lending money at interest was forbidden amongst Christians. Jews, not being Christians, filled that vacuum. In Eastern Europe, Jews were farming types, tenant farmers or employees of farm-land owners.They could not own land, they needed special permission from local law enforcement to travel from on village to another. Without permission, punishment was severe. They were restricted by their Christian monarchs and were channeled by powers-to-be to the certain vocations to which they were allowed. They were never in position to make vocational choices until post Russian Revolution.

I took my wife on a scuba vacation several years ago and discovered that the little town we went to had many Jewish owned shops. All of the shops had four or five employees, all in their early to mid twenties. They were all very well groomed and dressed. They always spoke yiddish to each other, were distant from customers, and I got the very distinct feeling they were ‘up to something’.

To be fair, the guy holding the “on Yom Kippur banks should atone” sign might well be simply be using the fact that it’s now around Yom Kippur and it means “the day of atonement”.
If it happened around Christmas and the sign said “on Christmas banks should not be like Scrooge”, or on Halloween and the sign said “Banks scare me more than witches”, it would hardly prove the sign holder thinks bankers are part of a worldwide Christian or satanic conspiracy.

True, but it is generally known in the USA that Yom Kippur is a “day of atonement” and that it is taking place at this time of the year. I won’t be surprised if you took this picture last saturday, which actually *was* the day of atonement… if it were May or February and he were still referring to Yom Kippur, you’d have a point.
What’s more, it doesn’t say “bankers” should atone, but that BANKS should. This is significant: practically everybody who goes to these protests hates *banks*, but the shibboleth that identifies the antisemites is that they go on and on about the “the bankERS” when they mean “the Jews”.
I’d say the simpler explanation — it just occured to him to use the generally-known fact that it’s now the day of atonement to say “banks are bad, m’kay?” — is more likely, unless you spoke to him and know something about him I don’t. In any case I’m willing to give him (though not the other folks you show) the benefit of the doubt.

To my eternal shame, back in the 60′s you would have been photographing me and my ‘comrades.’ I was a pseudo-Marxist and president of the SDS chapter at my SUNY campus. The only thing I can posit in my defense was that I was subsequently ‘purged’ for exhibiting ‘bourgeois democratic tendencies.’ (I’m not making this up, my Stalinist ‘friends’ actually used these terms.) I remained, however, a liberal. When, too many years later I went over to the Dark Side and began to profess conservative arguments, many of my ‘liberal’ friends unfriended me. I became a pariah among people I had considered close friends for decades. So much for diversity of thought.
What I find utterly baffling is the antisemitism of the left. Growing up in NY, I was the token WASP amongst my many Jewish classmates and neighbors. I always found them to be the warmest, smartest and funniest people I ever knew. While I was long a believer in free enterprise, the cause of Israel and anti-communist, it took me until the Clinton years to finally see the light (with a lot of help from my close friend Harry Stein and his wife, Priscilla Turner). When President Reagan died I wept.

Wilhelm Marr coined the term “anti-semitism” in 1879 as a fancy, pseudo-intellectual way of saying “Jew-hatred.” He chose the term “semitism” or “semite” because Hebrew is a semitic language. Arabic is also a semitic language but has nothing to do with “anti-semitism.” The Arabs – the Mohammedans- are presently the most virulent haters of Jews.

Delia — anti-semitic means “jew-hating”. This terminology is a bit unfortunate, since “semitic” refers to a family of Middle Eastern languages and ethnicities who speak them (including Arabs). However, since Wilhelm Marr coined the term and founded his “League for Anti-Semitism” (1879) anti-semitism refered to antipathy toward jews, and not toward Arabs or Maltese or other semites.
To clear up another point of confusion, Jews are an ethnic group (with interesting genetics that you can google) and Judaism is a religion whose adherents follow the precepts of Torah (and Talmud etc). One does not automatically imply the other and some geneticists are using “Israelites” to refer to the ethnic group as opposed to adherents of Judaism.
The haters at times hate adherents to religion (in Tsarist Russia or medieval Spain getting baptized for a Jew removed essentially all restrictions) and at times they hate purely for ethnicity (in Hitler’s Germany, or in Soviet Union or in modern Russia or, I suspect, the modern Left and the OWS clowns depicted here — my guess is that for them a Jewish buddhist or marxist are equally eligible for hate).

Another group – or movement – that is relatively new and seems to be quite popular among the Occupy demonstrators is the “Zeitgeist movement”, which is a borderline cult…If you’re unfamilar with Zeitgeist I would recommend looking into it. It’s a Utopian futurist cult/ideology that is hugely popular in Europe, and growing worldwide.

You go into some of these blue state big cities or areas where they have a university that teaches Marxism, and like a lot of cities everywhere, the jobs have been gone now for 25 years and nothing’s replaced them. And they fell through the Clinton administration, and the Bush administration, and each successive administration has said that somehow these communities are gonna regenerate and they have not. So it’s not surprising then that they get bitter, they cling to Marxism or anarchy or antipathy to people who aren’t like them like middle-class working Americans or anti-Semitic sentiment or anti-capitalist sentiment as a way to explain their frustrations.

Of the 41 people listed as “key executives at these banks, one appears to be Jewish. There’s 1 Hindu name, 1 Ismaili Moslem, 16 WASP, 4 Irish, 1 Italian, 1 French, 7 German, 1 Hispanic, 1 Greek, and the rest are ambiguous.

W isn’t eligible to be Vice President because he’s already served two terms as President and the Constitution forbids him a third. Since the Constitution says that the Vice President must be eligible to the Presidency, he is not eligible for VP, either.

I would like to know how a group like the jews can be deemed off-limits by the people commenting here. Just because the Holocaust happened does not mean jews can be off the hook for any crimes they ever commit. Jews don’t have a free pass to do whatever they want, anti-semitism or not. These people that throw out words like anti-semitism couldn’t possibly muster the brain cells required to refute the fact that jews are only 2% of America’s population but they make up about 80% of every important institution. Anti-Semitism must have had its genesis in the religion itself, namely two principal items. Insisting that Jews were the chosen people automatically set those who were not supposedly chosen against those who were. This elitism prevented Jews from proselytizing and so their numbers never reached those of the more aggressive Christian and Muslim cousins. Had there been one and a half billion Jews in the world, the Holocaust might never have happened. Hitler wouldn’t have had the nerve or the support. The world is filled with prejudice of groups against other groups but when it becomes dangerous for one group to discriminate against another, they tend to rationalize. Neanderthal type people are generally bullies and pick on those who allow themselves to be bullied. European Jews were largely bourgeois, liked the good life, were not fighters. They submitted. If Jews produced some suicide bombers and issued fatwas on those who speak out against them and instilled fear in anti-Semites, you would see a dramatic drop in overt anti-Semitism.
Just how many OWSers are there? I get the impression they consist of a few hundred professional protesters and oddballs. There are two real stories here; 1) why is such a miniscule unimportant group of loonies being given ANY media time and 2) what does it say about Pelosi and Obama that they support such a miniscule group of misfits?
Another question is I am even bothering to comment on such an unimportant story.

Therefore, we have to understand that all of the good changes that can be made in the world can only happen above nature – only with the help of the method of correction! All of these demonstrations and demands are part of big politics, whose objective is to level this entire area and establish the power of Arab fundamentalism here. China also lacks real power because it is occupied with producing “toys.” This activity does not provide it with a powerful influence. And even though the Chinese have now dispersed all over the world, this still isn’t an “incursion” because their inner psychology has not changed, and it stops them.
All of this is finely calculated, and it is arranged from Above. Everything unravels by a strict program, which you can read about in the Prophets, which describe what will happen to the world in the end of days. And Israel is precisely at the very tip of the scale’s indicator, determining the direction and the steps that the world will take.
This tendency is very precise and it is already clear to many. I am not revealing anything new here. In the end, we will gain greater awareness of a simple fact: That we have nothing to rely on besides the upper force. But that doesn’t mean simply screaming “Save me!” into the sky, but rather, we have to make real actions and attract this force to us. Just as America attracts foreign forces to itself and operates through them, so we attract the upper force and operate with its help. I think that the success of the good forces is guaranteed to us. That’s not true, a quick check on wikipedia says that the number of people who see themselves as Jewish is around 1.7% and including those that think of themselves as only culturally Jewish, not religiously, this number goes up to 2.2%. I am not a regular reader of this web site, but I get the impression it is a left end of spectrum site, so its take that protesters who believe that Jews and banking constitutes a collusion and/or conspiracy is not surprising.
