Rasmussen: Perry 44, Obama 41

Rasmussen is out with some startling new numbers today.

For the first time this year, Texas Governor Rick Perry leads President Obama in a national Election 2012 survey. Other Republican candidates trail the president by single digits.

A new Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey shows Perry picking up 44% of the vote while the president earns support from 41%. Given the margin of sampling error (+/- 3 percentage points) and the fact that the election is more than a year away, the race between the two men is effectively a toss-up. Just over a week ago, the president held a three-point advantage over Perry. (To see question wording, click here.)

Perry leads by nine among men but trails by five among women. Among voters under 30, the president leads while Perry has the edge among those over 30. The president leads Perry by 16 percentage points among union members while Perry leads among those who do not belong to a union.

Former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney currently trails the president by four percentage points, 43% to 39%. That’s a slight improvement for the Republican compared to a week ago.

Lots of cautions are in order here. It’s early, so early that we’re still several months from the first primary. Gov. Perry hasn’t appeared in a debate yet. He’s set to appear in his first one next week, not coincidentally the very debate that the president tried bigfooting with his jobs speech.

But on the flip side, Perry has only been in the race for less than three weeks now. In that time, he has vaulted to the top of the GOP field and now has his first national lead over President Obama. It’s not hard to figure out why: Jobs. Joe Biden’s three-letter word is the president’s greatest weakness. We have thousands lining up just for a chance at a job interview these days, while the president keeps growing his job-killing regulatory state. Scenes like that explain the biggest part of his weakness, and Perry’s jobs record in Texas provides a handy answer.

But… but… Romney is more electable!!! He’s almost as electable as Jon Huntsman!!!!!

(Ow. I think I sprained something.)

    • Dana

      Heh, you nailed it.
I have to admit, I was smiling pretty hard when I saw this poll, ’cause that was my main basis for supporting Romney.

    • sinz54

The Quinnipiac poll shows that both Obama-Perry and Obama-Romney matchups are in a statistical dead heat right now.

Of course, “right now” doesn’t matter. We’ve got a long way to go.

      • Dana

Great! That poll is of registered voters, too, unlike Rasmussen. But on election day those dispirited Obama voters aren’t going to show up in droves like they did in 2008.

Secession has been a verboten issue in the United States since the end of the Civil War. Any group who’ve brought it up have been targeted by press and government as ‘militant fringe groups” All of a sudden in 2009, we’re seeing it endorsed by career politicians in several states simultaneously, and the media is giving them good press.

Last week, Rick Perry, Texas Governor since George W. Bush’s departure in 2000, raised secession of Texas from the Federal Union at a Ron Paul type ‘Tea Party” to protest Federal spending and the tax burden on the little guy.

Clearly the Illuminati intend to harness and divert popular discontent to advance their own secret agenda, I.e. The melding of the USA into their world government. Many people think the tea party movement in general exhibits a suspicious amount of organization and media acceptance. (Contrast Fox TV’s coverage of this with “9-11 Truth.”)

Perry later told the Star-Telegram that he “never specifically said that Texas should consider trying to secede.” Technically he’s correct. He got cheers telling the Tea Party rabble that the Republic of Texas legislature left a provision in the 1845 agreement to cede with the US Federal government.

But Perry is no populist. In May 2007, Dallas Morning News reported, “Gov. Rick Perry is flying to Istanbul, Turkey, today to speak at the super-secret Bilderberg Conference, a meeting of about 130 international leaders in business, media and politics.” All the Governor’s press secretary had to say was, “He’s looking forward to learning the secret handshake.” And, “It’s their conference, and I suppose they can run it anyway they want.” Perry’s expenses were officially paid by the PAC group ‘Texans for Rick Perry’.

Although he’s never cared what the voters want, Perry intends to run for an unprecedented third term for Governor in 2010.

Perry’s gubernatorial resume includes supporting ‘Open Borders’; proponent of the $145 billion+ Trans-Texas (NAFTA) Highway to the dismay and anger of central Texas residents who have never been consulted on whether they want or need it. (Thousands of square miles of land has been seized by the State of Texas under eminent domain for this project in Central Texas from the Mexican border just west of San Antonio, Austin, and and Dallas and North Texas.) Perry helped set it up so the project is being built by the Spanish contractor Cinta, and paid for by new toll highways all over the State.

Perry further alienated Texas parents and Legislators by attempting to override a “No” decision on mandatory vaccination of 11-year-old girls with an vaccine for an STD, venereal & warts (the $350 a pop “slut shot.”) Perry invoked Executive Order in Feb 2007, but families filed class action suit and many financial connections between Perry and big pharma corporation Merck came out. Perry backed down but a new bill has been introduced that will make Gardasil mandatory “as an admission requirement for all primary and secondary schools.”

          THE REAL SECESSIONISTS

The real secessionist movement leaders were arrested, one killed in 1997. Old school Texans will remember there was a genuine grass roots secessionist movement during the 70′s through the 90′s. They called themselves the Republic of Texas. During the 80′s one couldn’t miss seeing thousands of ‘SECEDE!’ bumper stickers in Houston and Austin traffic. Few people took the Secessionists seriously, but the Federal and Texas governments did. Secessionist movement leaders were hunted down and arrested or killed in West Texas in 1997.

The story made the New York Times and CNN, referring to them as ‘militant secession group’ and ‘fringe group’. The group, led by Richard McLaren, stated historical fact that the original Republic of Texas legislature had never ratified Texas becoming a territory or State of the United States. The Republic of Texas was chartered as a sovereign nation recognized by the United States government at the time.

All the Republic of Texas members had been calling for was an official state wide public referendum so citizens could decide whether they wanted to remain under Federal government or reclaim Republic status.

One secessionist was killed in the Davis Mountains by Texas State Police helicopter snipers. No other witnesses. How is it that Governor Rick Perry is getting full media support using the same arguments as did a ‘militant fringe group’ ?

          • Mark v

Perry later told the Star-Telegram that he “never specifically said that Texas should consider trying to secede.” Technically he’s correct.

I’m learning that Rick Perry is very good at “never specifically sa[ying” much of anything, while leaving the impression that he has said very brave and important things.

He’s kind of like that oft-seen drivel on late night TV ads: COMPARE AT $29.95!

This leaves most people with the impression that what was said was, “Compare our price to the USUAL market price of $29.95!”

But actually, it doesn’t say that.

In fact, when analyzed according to the rules of English grammar, we find that the expression says exactly NOTHING.

So, COMPARE! Rick Perry’s current rhetoric with his track record.

            Something stinks in Texas.

        • white tiger

But those “dispirited voters”; no-shows perhaps, will surely be more than replaced by the votes denied to service members who will again not receive their absentee ballots, the dead, the ficticious, those who vote several times, felons, retarded, insane, et. sim.

My lament is that we are never going to have a candidate who is not a CFR, Trilateral, Bilderberger, or some other kind of poisonous, vicious, traitor and satanist. Why?

        • Anonymous

it doesn’t matter what a poll says…it matters what you do when you get in that voting booth.

  2. 2. JGwen

The nicest part of this early picture is that Rasmussen is an extremely creditable pollster. Am hoping the good news keeps rolling in!

    • Tundra Gregg

God how could anyone support someone like Bush? Perry is Bush on steroids. I am not happy with Obama but compared to some of these crazy folks like Perry Obama is a much better alternative.

      • Obama is better than Perry?

Get thee back to Democratic Underground, troll.

      • Rob Crawford

Don’t tell me — Perry is “crazy” because he doesn’t believe in something that has no impact on the job he’s campaigning for. Or because he believes a textbook Ponzi scheme should be called a Ponzi scheme. Or because he’s running as a member of the Republican Party. Or because he attends a mainstream church that doesn’t preach violence and hatred like Obama’s. Or because he believes in economic liberty.

If that’s “crazy”, I’ll take crazy over Obama’s brain-dead stupidity and rampant corruption.

        • Dana

Probably a great many people WILL actually think Perry’s a little crazy on those things (and let me also toss in the fact that he got poor grades in college) but they’ll give him a pass on all of it because it’s exactly as you say- those things don’t matter when the country is in the economic dumpster. They know Perry can turn it around.

          • Raymond in DC

And, uh, what were Obama’s grades again? Oh right, he won’t release them.

          • Dana

I know, Raymond, I’m just speculating what some others might think.

          • Ben Blankenship

You diss the Aggie’s scholarship at your peril. A time-tested truism in Texas:
“What do you call a Texas Aggie ten years after graduation? — Boss!”

          • Karla, CA

I’d venture to guess that Obama’s grades were worse than Perry’s.

      • ahem

They don’t pay you enough, Comrade Gregg. if you hadn’t majored in in Gender Studies, you might have had a good-paying job now, instead of sitting in your parents’ basement writing BS for a living.

As someone once said, you have nothing to lose but your chains—or words to that effect.

        • ahem

Incidentally, I think you ought to start calling yourself something like “Alaskan Gregg” or “Grizzly Gregg.” That’ll fool ‘em.

      • trangbang68

I would qualify your statement… Obama is much better alternative to….uh…
how about nobody. Go away Skippy.

      • jarmo

Have you been living under a rock the last two years? Elmer Fudd would be better than Obama.

      • Ole Sarge

What are you smoking, should give it up bud.

    • Zogby Poll was only one I used to believe–does anyone know what he’s reporting? Saw an interview with him on C-Span once and he explained how he counts indpendents as critical to results.

Independents, people forget, can register in either party if they choose to do so–make a bit of mischief even,

I see Ron Paul is urging Democrats to register Republican and vote for him. Suppose EVERYBODY registered Republican and then voted for the one they’d like easiest for Obama to beat??

We might end the 2-party system without a shot–good thing too! Start over.

      • Justah

Ron Paul goes after the college kids – apparently, he and Ralph Nader have formed a coalition. Nader says that Ron Paul is a “progressive” Libertarian and they are urging Democrats to vote for Ron Paul.

Paul can’t get the GOP nomination, which means that he will have to go in as a 3rd party candidate. This is probably Obama’s only chance to hold on to the Oval office he never visits.

      • Ole Sarge

        Auroa 1920

Have you seen Perry’s transcript? that is bad…

    http://www.scribd.com/doc/61684192/Rick-Perry-s-Texas-A-M-Transcript

    • IcePilot

Yeah – let’s compare Perry’s transcript with President Obama’s transcript. That will show everyone how much smarter Obama is than Perry.

      Oh wait….

      • Dana

Yep. I think the media is going to keep mum on this one.

    • Have you seen Obama’s transcript?

      I haven’t either.

However, I’ve seen the results of both their policies. Look at how Texas is doing as opposed to the rest of the nation under Obama.

Now, go find another proxy server, think up another username, and try trolling us again.

    • Jim Baker

Pretty refreshing to see a candidate who doesn’t care whether you get to read his school transcripts, isn’t it?

    • Tom Lucas

No, that is not a bad transcript. First, the date is 1968-1970, before grade inflation took hold. “C” was considered an average grade; about 50-60% of students taking any given class received that grade. Second, look at what he was taking – physics, trig, organic chem and others. I’d much rather have a President who struggled with organic chem than one who didn’t even attempt something difficult like that and for whom the logic of those courses is unfathomable.

      • Raymond in DC

Perry was smart enough to fly for the Air Force. What was Obama doing at that same age?

We might well consider what the Wall Street Journal and Kudlow have noted re Governor/Candidate Perry’s financial smarts:

      wsj – Perry’s Public Service
      Behold, a hard-money Texas politician
“The real news …(is)…the substance and politics of Mr. Perry’s demarche. Here we have a Presidential candidate, a Texas populist no less, laying out a position in favor of sound money. This is a bear walking on its hind legs. The ghosts of Wright Patman and Henry B. Gonzalez are howling in the Hill Country.

PULL QUOTE from Perry’s Red-Hot Bernanke Slam, A Commentary By Lawrence Kudlow: So it turns out that Governor Perry — even with his overly strong language — is a pretty sharp economic and monetary analyst.

    • ahem

oa: Your guy can’t even write a periodic sentence.

      Thanks for playing.

    • JGwen

If we want to reflect on Governor/Candidate Perry’s “job related” smarts we might want to consider the assessments of the Wall Street Journal and Larry Kudlow:

      wsj – Perry’s Public Service
      Behold, a hard-money Texas politician
“The real news …(is)…the substance and politics of Mr. Perry’s demarche. Here we have a Presidential candidate, a Texas populist no less, laying out a position in favor of sound money. I am shocked, shocked by these results. Who are these women who support Obama? Are his illegal resident relatives over-sampled here?

C’mon Ladies, we can do better than President Downgrade. Just because he reminds you of a past boyfriend is not reason enough to give him another chance. Who prefers Justin Bieber over a grown up? Clue: a guy this proud of his pant creases is never going to be that into you. Move on.

    • Frank Lee

How can you possibly be surprised by the poor judgment of the female electorate? Have you ever seen the opinion polls on global warming? Women are much more gullible, and men much more skeptical.

    • PaulaC

THIS native Texan is a Perry girl all the way! I’m trying not to start counting chickens yet, as this is still very early in the race. But these poll results make me feel like dancin’. The Governor is dominating. Oh yeeaaahhh.

      That’s my cowboy! Perry 2012!

  6. 6. proreason

We’re about to learn if Perry has any moles on his ass.

Here’s hoping the governor doesn’t have any handicapped grandchildren, and that he has never spit on a sidewalk.

    • john

What would be wrong with handicapped children?

      • proreason

        You must be conservative.

Every good liberal knows that handicapped children should be aborted, like Sarah Palin failed to do when she had her Down’s Syndrome baby. Sarah obviously had her child for political purposes to rub her ideology in America’s face. Now he is going to be an unnecessary burden on society.

        • myth buster

And why do you think we love Sarah Palin so much? The left’s visceral reaction to the fact that neither she nor we want any part of your T-4 Project causes us to rally around her when you spew hatred for her son.

  7. The media will hate any Republican that gets elected President.
That will cause them to have to get back to work with their investigative journalism that they have completely abandoned. Since Obama’s coronation, they’ve been on vacation and able to follow him around to all these exorbitant vacation spots at taxpayer expense.
More evidence that the Republican Party is the most honorable and morally superior Party, since the main stream media holds them accountable for every single move.
Any Republican has been thoroughly vetted, whereas the Democrats are coddled and protected like little newborn kittens.
And sorry to say; The media behavior during a Republican incumbency, redeems their credibility.

    • KZ

And let’s not forget, once there’s a Republican in the White House the anti-war movement will awaken from its current coma.

  8. 8. David Thomson

Rick Perry will probably be our next president. His campaign staff is first rate. Perry will also humiliate Obama in a debate.

    • Jim Baker

You forgot, Obama is the brilliant one here. He has the (D) behind his name. I wonder what the odds are that every Democrat President over the last 90 years is brilliant, and every Republican President over those same 90 years has been intellectually challenged. Oh yeah, our news media has been in collectivist hands for about 90 or so years.

Let’s see the guy in office now fly a jet. I know he can get high, but can he do it with an airplane instead of a joint?

    • You need to be on Perry’s campaign committee.

And the same goes for LGoPs below.

    • Hysteria

I think he flew C-130 (Hercules) – technically a turbo-prop and not normally called a “jet”

    • Agreed. Way to early for the latest “fad” to be anything more than just that. Across the field, Obama is weak. There is a long way to go, and some candidates have hardly had any scrutiny. I remember when Fred Thompson was the man. Blooms fall off roses quick in politics.

      • JGwen

In the end are there really any “roses” among the politicians in the race?

It will be so bad there will be cries of vote fraud from the left. How could he only get 55% of Detroit? The answer will be Clinton’s “It’s the economy, stupid.”

I was at home in rural western Massachusetts on Saturday, August 27 when Rasmussen called to poll me, starting with right/wrong direction and Obama favorable or NOT, then Generic GOP v Obama, then Bachmann v Obama. TEA Party fav or NOT. Then Generic GOP v Dem for U.S. Senate.

I thought it was odd that only Bachmann was named, and obviously this poll was done after mine. Even if Rasmussen assumes Massachusetts is a lock for Romney, I was surprised that neither he nor Perry were included.

    • urbanleftbehind

…Which begs the question: Is Bachman a Dem Plant or a Romney Cock-Block against Palin and/or Perry? It is looking so grim for the Dems that you will probably see a lot of “recent LDS converts” flooding the open Republican primaries.

  18. 18. ETAB

Let’s say that we ignore the individuals themselves (Obama, Perry, Romney, Bachmann, etc)..and just consider the content or ‘type of individual’ and the situation.

Situation in 2006: Reality was unacceptable (wars, terrorism)…what the people wanted was a rosy future of ‘hope and change’…which was not articulated but was purely emotional.

Situation in 2012: Reality is unacceptable (economy, jobs, debt)..what the people want is very ‘close to home’..practical basic realities. No emotions but practicalities of jobs.

Individual Types are made up of Performance and Content.

Individual Types in 2006: Obama is pure performance; there is nothing real about him; he’s a stage performer. There is no content. He dislikes ‘coming down to reality’ and refuses to deal with policies, programs; he delegates that to others, and he’s surrounded himself with radical socialists. He deals only in ‘activist feel good emotions..vs the Evil Others. He’s the eternal community activist.

Bachmann and Romney tend to be a bit heavy on the performance mode and that’s a failing. Plus, Bachmann’s content is too rigid within the conservative mode, Romney’s wavers like a pendulum in the wind.

Pawlenty was NOT a performer… He’s content and practical. The problem was, that such a campaigner, up against someone like Obama who is Pure Performance…that’s a hard sell.

Perry has both performance and content. His content is practical, geared to the immediate realities of the economy, while Obama is focused only on the amorphous ‘future..it will get better’.

I think the polls are showing that the electorate want to face the first of the hard realities of our economy – the result of the socialist Keynsian policies of the last decades: no jobs and no economic growth.

They may not yet be ready to face the basic infrastructural realities of socialism – (1) an economy based on borrowing from others rather than on domestic production and investment, to (2) support massive entitlement programs and a public service empire. But..that will have to be faced.

So, the election comes down to Facing Reality. Who will present themselves as best suited to face and deal with reality? The jobs reality? Obama and his future-oriented rhetoric…or…practical, hard-nosed guidance?

  19. 19. Jack in Silver Spring

Bryan – I wouldn’t be breaking out any champagne bottles just yet. There’s a lot of time remaining between now and Nov. 2012, and a lot can happen. In particular, if the effects of QE2 kick in, and I think they will by the first quarter of 2012, the economy should show much improvement. In that case, O may be a lot harder to beat come the election than he is today.

    • So, you think that printing money out of thin air helps the economy.

Why don’t we just print one million dollars for each American and solve every problem ?
      It’s not too much:
      300,000,000,000,000

And then we can print more money and pay back all the debt to China.

And then we can print more money to pay for Obama’s holidays (4 trillions should do it.)

Sherab Zangpo: My many years as an economists of the Milton Friedman variety lead me to expect that printing money by the Fed and subsequent rapid increases in M2 and MZM will(or should) get the economy moving. What may undo my expectation is the onerous regulations O’s Administration is imposing on the country (plus the uncertainties raised by Obamacare and Dodd-Frank). If that happens all we may get is inflation and more unemployment.

Sherab – I’d be first in the line to wave O goodbye on January 20, 2013, but I am being realistic in realizing that if the economy gets moving because of QE2, O will hard to get out of office. FYI I watch Rasmussen’s daily poll and I ask myself every dat, why aren’t the numbers worse than they’re showing? Obviously, the guy has enough remaining charisma that he may be to hang onto office for another term.

These polls ask an answer to a hypothetical. Perry or Obama. It looks really different, when it is no longer a hypothetical. Right now, the Republican vote is split. Once the primaries are over, Obama won’t even be close.

  21. 21. Michael Smith

I despise the Republicans (for the most part) — because as a rule, they are moral cowards unwilling to challenge the Democrats moral premise: the premise that an ever-accelerating, every-growing regulatory/welfare state is morally necessary because government has the moral right to force us to sacrifice for the sake of the needy.

The fact is, when Republicans were in power they, too, merely expanded the government’s power over our lives and enforced ever-greater sacrifices on the American people. So the American people, in their frustration, voted out the Republicans to punish them.

Thus it is actually the Republican’s fault that we got an Obama and a Democratically-controlled Congress that has vastly expanded the powers of government over our lives and greatly accelerated the looting-by-inflating away the value of our earnings that is now eating us alive.

But it is now time punish — severely punish — the Democrats for what they’ve done to us all. So I’ll vote Republican, no matter who they run.

This liberal will be voting for whatever candidate the GOP sees fit to nominate.

Perry sucks. The more I read about him, the more I can’t believe how.dumb Texas was to not run him off. The reason you see the media taking pot shots at him is because they want to run against him! Compare this to the crap cannon they shot at Sarah! He’s not a rock ribbed conservative. He’s a capital ‘M’ moderate.

Mike Huckabee was real low in the polls until Iowa. Cain / palin 2012.

Perry is not perfect, but he hasn’t been a wet towel on the economy in Texas. I have lived in Texas since 1988, so I am familiar with Rick Perry’s record. He wasn’t my pick in the primary last year, but I gladly gave him my vote in the general election. I personally am a vote for ABO.
