Sen. Jim DeMint Endorses Ted Cruz in Texas Senate Race

Republican Ted Cruz’s Senate candidacy has picked up steam, money and endorsements over the past few weeks. This endorsement by conservative lion Sen. Jim DeMint is likely to help him pick up more of the other two.

“[Ted is] the strongest conservative in the race and he’s earned the support of the grassroots in Texas. Ted Cruz has a deep appreciation for the U.S. Constitution and he’s someone conservatives can count on to fight for the principles of freedom that make America great.”

DeMint also cited Cruz’s strong grassroots support, and called upon Texans to unite behind Cruz as the best chance to put a conservative into the Senate.

That race, which is to replace the retiring Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison, has been shaken up considerably over the past few weeks with the exits of Michael Williams and Roger Williams, both to the newly created Congressional District 33 race in north Texas. It may be shaken up yet again depending on what Gov. Rick Perry and Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst decide to do. Or more accurately, what Gov. Perry decides to do. Dewhurst has long been considered a strong contender in the Senate race if he joins it, but if Gov. Perry runs for president, most expect the Lt. Gov. to stay out of the Senate race as the prospect of succeeding Perry to the governorship becomes a real possibility.

The winner of next year’s GOP primary in this race is very likely to be the next Senator from Texas; Democrats haven’t won a statewide race in the state in nearly 20 years, and there are no signs of that changing any time soon.
