Today’s hair-on-fire in Japan story is from Stars and Stripes.  I’m not going to quote it — it’s one of those stories where the reporter quotes people who quote other people as saying that evacuating children under 5, or under 2, or with “special medical conditions”, or something, has been advised.

I did get interested enough to look up the radiation dose rates in Yokosuka, where these stories are being placed.  (You can find it here.)  It’s a little hard to read since the total dose rate is so close to zero, but it’s clear the total dose-rate is less than 0.1 μSv/h.  (For an explanation of the units here, see my “Understanding Radiation” article.)

By comparison, I looked up the background rate in Boulder, Colorado, where I am.  It’s about 0.2μSv/h.

I guess that’s why I don’t see a lot of Navy people in Boulder.
