Facebook is in talks to hire Robert Gibbs, President Obama’s former White House press secretary, for a senior role in helping to manage the company’s communications, people briefed on the negotiations said.
Facebook is seeking out Mr. Gibbs ahead of an initial public offering planned for early 2012, these people said.
Leave aside whether Gibbs is actually an effective communicator or not. In my opinion, he was a condescending, abrasive and generally unpersuasive and ineffective press secretary. His possible hiring at facebook isn’t about that. It is about access and power. If Gibbs takes the job, a company valued at $60 billion, with a massive global reach that makes it one of the most influential companies on earth, will have Obama’s former (?) spokesman at the helm of its communications effort, just in time for 2012.
Question: When facebook is used as a major part of Obama’s re-election strategy, as everyone knows will happen, what becomes of the idea of campaign finance reform?
