I was in the Philippines in Sept 2001 and I remember having a conversation a week before 9/11 with some Pinoy friends about why “no one” in the West cared about the Islamic Jihad going on around the world. My explaination was that America wouldn’t care until it happened to them and when it did it wouldn’t be long before people there blamed their own government for it.
A week later I was with the same people and we watched it unfold live on TV in the restaurant we were at. No one in the room was surprised at what they were seeing. Upset and angry, yes. Not surprised. Not after years of Abu Sayyuf bombing, killing and plotting to do the same sort of thing there.
