Don’t miss Charles Martin’s fine obituary of Arthur C. Clarke over on Pajamas this morning. Charlie wrote me almost immediately after the announcement of Clarke’s death that he wanted to do one for us and that was a no-brainer. I couldn’t imagine anyone better and the obit he produced reads as if he had been working on it for weeks. (Maybe he had – you know these sci-fi guys.) I don’t have much to say about Clarke myself except that’s it’s nice to see people of that quality living long lives.

I can’t think of Clarke without thinking of Stanley Kubrick, who unfortunately didn’t live a long life at all. Their movie together (“2001″ of course) still holds up wonderfully well.
Pretty amazing considering that everything about that sort of movie-making has moved so far so fast in the forty years since it was made.
Clarke is one of my Heroes. His colaboration on a film about fractals made it possible for many people to know something about fractals for the first time.

Clarke’s books had a certain readability that made you feel as if you were moving too fast as he explained everything. My favorites were “Childhood’s End” and “The City and the Stars” but everything he wrote made you feel like you were reading something important and feasible.
