September 1, 2004 - 12:40 pm - by Roger L Simon

Yesterday this site had its first day with over 25,000 visitors. Daily average was over 12,500 for September, up fifty percent from the previous month and, of course, a record. To be frank, it’s making me nervous. These are just my opinions on here, worth no more than yours. I am honored that you come here to discuss them… and even more honored by the quality of the comments. I learn from them every day.

PJ Media appreciates your comments that abide by the following guidelines:

1. Avoid profanities or foul language unless it is contained in a necessary quote or is relevant to the comment.

2. Stay on topic.

3. Disagree, but avoid ad hominem attacks.

4. Threats are treated seriously and reported to law enforcement.

5. Spam and advertising are not permitted in the comments area.

These guidelines are very general and cannot cover every possible situation. Please don't assume that PJ Media management agrees with or otherwise endorses any particular comment. We reserve the right to filter or delete comments or to deny posting privileges entirely at our discretion. Please note that comments are reviewed by the editorial staff and may not be posted immediately. If you feel your comment was filtered inappropriately, please email us at story@pjmedia.com.

Yours was one of the first blogs I ever read regularly.

That you simply provide your honest opinions, without thought to how they’ll “play,” is a great part of the site’s appeal.

    Keep up the good work.

  2. Roger, you said:

These are just my opinions on here, worth no more than yours.

I take strong exception to this statement!

Your opinions are definitely worth more than mine; that’s why I read you every day.

So get back to your computer and produce more opinions! We’ll be the judges of how worthy they are.

    ;-)

  3. Also, what Hubris (somewhat belying his name) said.

Your site is one of my favorites. I visit it several times each day.

I like it in part because of your insight (the comments are interesting as well, but you set the agenda). I think that what I really appreciate is that you are in an intellectual time of flux (I suspect that, like me, you never have voted for a Republican candidate for President and now can’t think of voting for anyone else), and you are bringing the light of fresh discovery to things that a more jaded conservative may not notice.

Anyway, a newspaper is just the collective comments of lots of individuals. It’s true that they have editors as well as reporters, but if the editors are in the same mindset as their reporters, this does not work as a check-and-balance system (the comments of the readers serve as kind of check and balance). Your blog is like an IF Stone Weekly, with one man conceiving the issues, writing the articles and posting them.

First some hesitation on Monday when it appears ever more likely that Bush will win, now a case of nerves when it appears that your opinions are reaching a vast audience. Fear of getting what you wished for? Frankly it sounds a bit Howard Deanish.

Nothing that a stiff drink won’t cure.

  6. With all due respect, these blog numbers are probably a pittance compared to the number of people who have read your books or seen your movies. Did people reading or seeing those ever make you nervous?

  7. ìFirst some hesitation on Monday when it appears ever more likely that Bush will win…î

Not so fast. Todayís Rasmussen daily tracking poll shows both presidential candidates at 47% each. When will we see a jump in the polls? Iím remain worried because the liberal media will do just about anything to destroy President Bush. This isn’t over yet.

  8. My comments are with WichitaBoy.

Furthermore, there’s a reason for those numbers – you have created something special here – your ideas, observations, etc and a nicely kept comment environment.

My only complaint is that sometimes the discussions get so interesting I spend too much time on them.

  9. I have little to add to the praise. Others have expressed it better than I have.

Which brings me to my second point. No, sir, your opinions are not worth more than mine, or anybody else’s. But you have the rare ability to express them is a way that’s clear, provocative, and fun to read. It’s easy to be two of those three things. Hitting the trifecta is hard.

    Keep up the good work.

Shhh, Roger, pipe down. We’re having a discussion here.

(Does that make you feel better? ;-)

    Hello Roger

I check your site every day and value it greatly but I don’t come here primarily for your personal comments rather for the space for comments you have created by your openess and example. Your commments section is unique in my experience of the net, you have cultivated a cadre of tough, intellectually fair and rigorous, commmentators.

    Thank you,

    Bill

  12. Roger: I have two words that explain it: intellectual honesty. The rest of your website is just dancing, so to speak.

  13. 13. Terrye

    Roger:

Lighten up and don’t worry so much.

We will try and not say anything that will bring the thought police down on you.

Man, I will be glad when this election is over. This whole blast from the past thing has got me thinking like it was the 60′s.

    “Roger:

Lighten up and don’t worry so much”–Terrye

Exactly my thoughts. It is the curse of the intellectual to always see all the possibilities, but please just enjoy your success.

This is a great blog by a great thinker with something honest to say.

    RELAX !!!

Thanks for allowing the rest of us to show up here and annoy you on a daily basis.

  15. Roger,

I like to read you because you are, like me, a liberal who can no longer go along with the Dem Party and Radical Left’s different versions of the Kool Aid. You’re a cafeteria thinker, some from the left, some from the right, most of it makes a lot of sense and is based on thought rather than peer pressure.

By the way, how is your cool-o-meter doing?

  16. 16. Assistant Village Idiot

Professor Simon, remember your competition. You have written actual mysteries and are trying to pull out the key facts from the daily events. The media buffoons you are replacing have to check for the answers in the back of Encyclopedia Brown. Even the second time around.

    Roger -

Integrity. Insight. Inquisitiveness. Fairness. Wit. Intelligence. Compassion. Intensity.

Other than that, I could probably just pass your site by any time I felt like it. Sure I could.

Glad you had a decent day. I hope tomorrow is even better.

    Roger, Roger, Roger — you are SO MUCH a better writer than most wannabee writers/ journalist hacks;

plus so much more intellecutally honest than most Leftist liberals.

I truly feel you want poor people to better off AND are willing to look at the results of policies that are taken. (Most Leftists refuse results comparisons)

*I* wanted you to write a book, or an e-book, with Michael J Totten, on the fall of Saddam, as you saw it in the blogosphere. (‘Roger and Michael’; or without, ‘The Living Mystery’ [ask your blogreaders for a title] …)

Don’t you want to be newspaper publisher/ editor? Publish, daily, an expanded ‘best of the web’, in hardcopy, so folks can buy it (like USA Today). Pay blog referrers.

Too much work? Prolly. But the Leftist media bias means there IS room for more “balanced and fair” reporting (not to be confused with its reverse).

And your commenters are among the very best (I try to be worthy).

  19. 19. Tom Grey

    intellectually, argh; tpyo. (joke!)

  20. 20. DennisThePeasant

Part of it must be that core of well-informed, insightful and extremely witty commenters that spend countless hours of their time writing well-informed, insightful and witty posts.

Or perhaps it’s just that Republicans run in packs.

  21. 21. Loren

I have been enjoying your site in the last month. So I guess I am part of the increase.

BTW, the increase from 12,500 to 25,000 is not a 50% increase. Rather, it is a 100% increase.

  22. 22. PeterUK

    Roger,

You are performing on inestimable public service by keeping a bunch of boomers busy, off the streets and out of the bars.An ideal place for those who are too old for a youth club and too young for a day centre to fore gather.
