Eli Lake warns that al-Qaeda is setting up for the potential kill in Afghanistan:

As President Obama outlines what he promises to be the end of the war in Afghanistan, new U.S. intelligence assessments are warning that al Qaeda is beginning to re-establish itself there.

Specifically, the concern for now is that al Qaeda has created a haven in the northeast regions of Kunar and Nuristan and is able to freely operate along Afghanistan’s only major highway—Route One, which connects the airports of Kandahar and Kabul.

“There is no doubt they have a significant presence in northeast Afghanistan,” Mac Thornberry, the Republican vice chairman of the House Armed Services Committee, told The Daily Beast. “It’s a lot of speculation about exact numbers, but again part of the question is what are their numbers going to be and what are there activities going to be when the pressure lets up.”

A look at the map shows what this implies. If you imagine a triangle with Kandahar, Kabul, and Peshawar across the border as vertices, then al-Qaeda is positioning astride the Kandahar-Kabul and Kabul-Peshawar edges. If it cuts these links, the game is over. Eli Lake can also read a map and sees the obvious:

If Thornberry’s warnings prove correct, then Obama is faced with two bad choices. He either breaks his promise to end America’s longest war or he ends up losing that war by withdrawing U.S. forces from Afghanistan too soon, allowing al-Qaeda to re-establish a base of operations in the country from which it launched 9/11.

But Rep. Adam Schiff, “a Democrat who serves on the House Intelligence Committee,” says that is the least of Obama’s worries: “(H)e said today the threat from al-Qaeda was far more worrisome in Syria, Yemen, and Iraq.” Somehow, without the press noticing, al-Qaeda has metastasized.

Still, there are forebodings that some kind of “Tet offensive” will happen in Afghanistan as soon as American forces become too small to make a difference. The 10,000 troops Obama will leave in Afghanistan will buy him time, but not much else. When they go, it may be the Last Helicopter Out of Saigon again:

One U.S. intelligence officer whose focus is Afghanistan said al-Qaeda and its allies have already gained access to the Kunar River Valley as U.S. forces began to draw down its presence this year.

Another concern for the U.S. military and intelligence community is the access al-Qaeda now has to Route One, the highway that runs through the provinces south of Kabul that connects the capital city to Kandahar. The U.S. intelligence official said there remains disagreement on the group responsible for a massive truck bomb that was intercepted last fall before it could detonate at its target, Forward Operating Base Goode near Gardez in Paktia Province. “There is a lot of evidence that this was al-Qaeda,” this official said …

Needless to say, this is not the picture of Afghanistan painted this week by Obama.

This is not a scenario that any military planner wants to contemplate.

There’s drums along the Don, too.

With all due respect; what indication is there that Obama would have any interest in making such a deal, with whom would he make it that would be capable of delivering their side of the bargain, and who would be gullible enough to believe that Barry would "turn Hell loose from the skies" on anyone but American civilians?

I have been saying here for some time that this is the "year of consequences, when the vultures come home to roost". The design margin Wretchard refers to is gone.

The forces in Afghanistan have been written off. Our best hope there is an Anabasis as an end game. I re-read it not long ago. And a couple of years ago when my Marine then-Gunnery SGT nephew was in Afghanistan I recommended it to him and his fellow NCO's as an example of what was coming. [no, it's not on the Marine reading list, but should be.]

Europe is not, and will not be ready for what is coming. The only thing that will stop Russian advances will be the suicidal defensive measure by Ukraine I outlined some months ago. None of the major NATO allies will stand up. All of the EU is so compromised and so torn with the battle between the member countries and the coming all-powerful EU Superstate that they have neither the resources nor the will to stand up to anybody. That includes Britain, where the major parties are willing to bring down the country rather than NOT submit to Brussels in everything.

In Asia, China and Vietnam are on the edge of a shooting war. Japan is realizing it stands alone and edging towards a defense policy. The rest of Asia realizes that it is alone.

Obama is negotiating to give Iran nuclear weapons [if they don't have them already] while preventing Israel from acting in self defense. Libya is in the chaos he deliberately created by turning it over to the Muslim Brotherhood, which helps all of the enemies of our country.

In our country, the economic collapse cannot be concealed any longer. The unemployment and inflation statistics are and long have been as bogus as any claim Obama may make of loving this country. They have been used to cook the books so that the GDP figures did not fall .... until now. The only reason that the Q1 GDP only fell 1% after inflation was because they count the money drained out of the economy by Obamacare the same as productive spending. Otherwise it would be -2%. They say that they will make it up in Q2; but that started on April 1 and we have been spiraling downhill since. And the Quarter ends June 30. As of June 30 they will not be able to claim we are not in a recession. Unless they are telling the truth. Because if we used the real figures for employment and inflation, we have been in a depression for over 6 years.

There is no sign of pulling out of it, and with the new IRS declaration of LAW [which authority I cannot find in the Constitution] that says employees cannot be put in the Obamacare "health exchanges"; companies that want to survive will have to move operations overseas, contract out, reduce the number of full time employees to an absolute minimum, automate everything they can, or just give up and close their doors.

All the while, Obama is throwing open the borders, giving de facto amnesty, and is being abetted by the Republicans. Secondary to the destruction of the country thereby, there will be the destruction of the Institutional Republican party.

Domestically, we are rapidly running out of boxes.

Gird thy loins, keep thine codpieces buttoned, and support your fellow Americans.

"Lustration, it's not just for Europe anymore."

It has been stated that the UN SecGen cannot come from a Veto Power of the Security Council. That is a convention and not a law. It was considered that if the United States had ratified the Treaty of Versailles and joined the League of Nations then Woodrow Wilson would have taken the Secretary General position in that organization. Tempting as it was to kick Wilson upstairs to get rid of him, the path that he had followed for every promotion from Judge to University President to POTUS, Senator Henry Cabot Lodge decided that was to great a price for the war ravaged world to pay and thwarted Wilson's ambition.

Obama is focused like a laser on the critical issue of LGBTQ rights in the Russian Federation. Delicate negotiations must not be compromised by bourgeoisie distractions.

Technically Putin has evaluated his opponents weaknesses and exploited them brilliantly. He was and is an example of a competent KGB officer. What he fails at is the task of building a functional law abiding and wealth creating society. In the long term he is as bad for Russia as he is for us, but that is small comfort. His manipulation of the Turks is noteworthy. Erdogan lead by his vanity and bigotry is cut off from potential allies and paralyzed as Russia advances.

It would be a good thing if the Europeans grew up and rebuilt their defenses. It would be a bad thing if they collapsed before Russian and Islamist pressure before any reforms could take effect. Iceland should buy and operate her own forces including four P-3 ASW aircraft and a squadron of F-18s or even F-35s. They do have a small coast guard that has tussled with the British. Upgrading to a few ASW corvettes with sufficient endurance for the North Atlantic is not beyond their capacity.

The Swedes and the Finns, while they have not historically loved each other and the Scandinavians indulge prejudices towards their neighbors that the English and Irish or Japanese and Koreans could take notes from, are I believe taking the Russians seriously. My expectation is that the weak link, steeped in pacifism and self pity and bigotry towards Americans and Jews and Capitalists, are the Norwegians.

Poland and the Baltics, where Latvia may be the weak link, may defy the appeasers in Berlin and Brussels. We may be surprised by who shows a spine if things unravel. Will Italy prove stronger than Germany?

In Afghanistan the Northeast was the stronghold of the Northern Alliance that was our first ally in 2003. That was the first ally betrayed when we tried to build our presence on Karzai and a Pushtun foundation. That proved a bed of sand.

You cannot defend a world that is already lost. Even President Bush failed to do what was needed in Afghanistan and Iraq. After defeating the true believers militarily he failed to ensure a Bill of Rights defending their people's natural God-given rights to life, liberty and creative pursuit of happiness. He had a once in a millennium opportunity to remake the Islamic world, and he blew it. It was only a matter of time that Afghanistan went back to primitive barbarity because their Constitution enshrines the primitive barbarity of Islamic Sharia Law.

We should now concern ourselves with defending home base - that should begin with a Constitutional amendment enshrining the Declaration of Independence as our supreme unamendable moral law, along with limits on federal taxation, balanced budget, term limits for Congress and the Supreme Court.

The world is descending into the abyss, but in order to survive and prevail, we must first stop committing socialist - collectivist - suicide.

"In the great journal of things happening under the sun, we, the American People, find our account running, under date of the nineteenth century of the Christian era.--We find ourselves in the peaceful possession, of the fairest portion of the earth, as regards extent of territory, fertility of soil, and salubrity of climate. We find ourselves under the government of a system of political institutions, conducing more essentially to the ends of civil and religious liberty, than any of which the history of former times tells us. We, when mounting the stage of existence, found ourselves the legal inheritors of these fundamental blessings. We toiled not in the acquirement or establishment of them--they are a legacy bequeathed us, by a once hardy, brave, and patriotic, but now lamented and departed race of ancestors. Their's was the task (and nobly they performed it) to possess themselves, and through themselves, us, of this goodly land; and to uprear upon its hills and its valleys, a political edifice of liberty and equal rights; 'tis ours only, to transmit these, the former, unprofaned by the foot of an invader; the latter, undecayed by the lapse of time and untorn by usurpation, to the latest generation that fate shall permit the world to know. This task of gratitude to our fathers, justice to ourselves, duty to posterity, and love for our species in general, all imperatively require us faithfully to perform. How then shall we perform it?--At what point shall we expect the approach of danger? By what means shall we fortify against it?-- Shall we expect some transatlantic military giant, to step the Ocean, and crush us at a blow? Never!--All the armies of Europe, Asia and Africa combined, with all the treasure of the earth (our own excepted) in their military chest; with a Buonaparte for a commander, could not by force, take a drink from the Ohio, or make a track on the Blue Ridge, in a trial of a thousand years. At what point then is the approach of danger to be expected? I answer, if it ever reach us, it must spring up amongst us. It cannot come from abroad. If destruction be our lot, we must ourselves be its author and finisher. As a nation of freemen, we must live through all time, or die by suicide." Abraham Lincoln

Isolationism will end America. The reforms you mention are necessary, but they seem to be married to a deeply emotional isolationism within the conservative movement. Only by breaking that knot will a solution be found.

The failure of the Obama Administration was predicted before it began. When it began, those who called it were called very bad names. As it continued, the masses continued to accept the media's whitewashing of Obama, the great hope and change. He was a person of color, with a big wide smile, someone to bring the grievances of blacks and Hispanics into alignment with the guilt-ridden yearnings of the white liberals for salvation. He was in fact an idol, a failed little -g god in a pantheon. And he was embraced by the majority of Americans until the last year or so, as far as I can see. Now, as the failures, external and internal, become too obvious to (completely) ignore, there is a mild rumbling in the land. But it is too mild still to precipitate a house-cleaning that would start with Obama's impeachment and removal from office. I guess the hope of conservatives is that the scandals will explode in a manner to bring a sweeping Congressional victory in the fall, followed by a Reagan Jr in the person of Cruz or Paul. In reality, the fix is in, the demographic change is permanent, the loss of basic American values is widespread, and America has turned into a soft and stale pillow. Israel, and others, stand essentially alone.

Larry in Israel - I appreciate your perspective, and usually agree. But here: "Israel, and others, stand essentially alone." Maybe. In the end, I suspect it's equally plausible that it's America that stands alone. America is a short-lived phenomenon. Population-wise, America is an out-post of human civilization. The people live in Asia. Israel will stand with India, China, Persia (the ayatollahs won't last). Maybe Slavic Russia. What used to be Christian Europe will on its way out and unrecoverable. Israel, where the women still give birth, and the children still have brains, will thrive.

The Evil genie is out of the Bottle. It all began in 1967 when the Israeli Forces reclaimed all of Jerusalem but in a moment of weakness and misguided secular-Jewish largesse decided to allow the Muslim's Al Aksa Mosque to remain undisturbed on Temple Mount. Temple Mount is a Spiritual Vortex, given to the Jewish Nation to safeguard by the Holy ONE, the Omnipotent Force of all Forces in the Universe, with strict instructions as to what is allowed and forbidden on this most Awesome and powerful Spiritual Powerplant on planet earth. The Jewish People have no Spiritual claim to the Holy Land when they do not fulfill their 'part of the bargain', that is, their G-d given responsibility under the Covenant to serve as
Custodians of the Mount. In effect, fulfilling that responsibility, more than any historical claims or 'legal' titles of ownership is what gives legitimacy to the Jewish possession of Jerusalem and the Holy Land.
On a deep and subconscious spiritual level this truth is felt if not understood not only by the European Union and United Nations but particularly by our half brothers in the Muslim world who have rightfully concluded the weakness and spiritual faithlessness of the Jewish Nation in spurning G-d's Will. Their fraudulent possession of Temple Mount and the Israeli Government's complicity in reinforcing of this fraud by officially forbidding any Jewish prayer or even for Jews to set foot there has caused a world-shattering metaphysical imbalance, a short-circuit so to speak.
Since 1967 the cancer of Radical Islam has metastasized world-wide, threatening every civilization with physical and spiritual destruction. The 9-11 attacks, Islamic unrest and Sharia in Europe, everywhere Islam has a presence, the dread and unspeakable menace of two nuclear armed Islamic States, Pakistan and soon Iran just to name a very few nightmares. Is this a coincidence? Is it a coincidence that all three major religions hold Jerusalem as sacred ground to be fought and died for? A coincidence that Jerusalem is never mentioned in Islam's holiest book, Koran, yet thousands of times in Jewish Scripture!
The truth is that nothing can stop this Cancer from spreading. Not Armed forces, Drone assassinations, Civil laws or security checkpoints. Not even the false panacea of a 'successful' political settlement with Arab Palestinians in Judea/Samaria for 'Palestinian' Statehood there will turn the tide and return the 'Genie' to the 'box'. Those are nothing but band-aids on soon-to-be terminal cancer. And more and more as the nations of the world, including formerly friendly ones in European Capitols and Washington D.C. Quietly have begun to openly question the merits, even the 'legitimacy' of the Jewish State, the situation facing Israel has become dire. Far worse than Iranian nukes is this other threat. Sadly, more and more American Jews have come to question Israeli status in that region. The BDS movement grows on American University campuses, most troubling as it now includes growing numbers of young liberal Jewish students, men and women.
Militarily, politically, philosophically, morally ...Israel is becoming weakened on many fronts. It is not certain the Jewish State can survive much longer under the expanded front.
Unless...The Jewish Nation will do what should have been done in 1967. Remove the Al Aksa from Temple Mount. Restore the balance to the Spiritual Vortex as was intended by the Holy ONE. There Is No Other Way. Yes, it will be painful. The region and world will bleed with Muslim fury and world-violence. For a while. And then, the cancer will die as the Genie of Spiritual imbalance is returned to the Bottle. There Is No Other Way. And Time Is Running Out.

Sudan and Nigeria are two more countries artificially thrown together with a sharia north and Christian or animist south, and that is a faultline right across that latitude. Sudan has already split.

Ironically, though Nigeria has trouble controlling its north, I see them as the most likely candidate to create an empire or confederation that occupies the entire sub-Saharan central belt of the continent as American resolve and power wains. Who would stop them? Nobody.

I think what we're seeing playing out in the Middle East and Africa is an inability for nations to exert sovereignty in their own territories. The reason for that is those nations were often created by the cultural successes of nations not even on the same continent, rather than the ebb and flow of the success of cultural groups which, for example, formed Europe.

What would a map of the Middle East look like without outside interference? It's clear it would be quite different. There are ethnic groups, such as the Kurds, who have routinely been denied even such things as full citizenship in Iraq, Iran, Turkey and Syria. That's going to cause a problem.

No one should be surprised violence shows itself in the nations with the least national identity. Expect continued war in Iraq and Afghanistan.

As for our own side of the world, there are more deaths in Mexico than Iraq, and Chicago for that matter, due to criminal cultures amounting to syndicates. We cannot exert sovereignty in Chicago or Detroit or Arizona and Texas and neither can Mexico or Guatemala.

Very well said.

We've [i.e., our America] reached the point where we can longer be the [accustomed and expected] St George of the World, being everywhere at once, simultaneously slaying these hydra-headed sub-monsters of our trans-national Muslim threat. That's over.

After 11 Sep, 2001 we just never gained the solidarity and national fury against our surprising Muslim enemy as we did in 1942 against those surprisingly efficient Japanese. [.... they were called other things then, politically very incorrect to say openly here]

That's the unrealized, unspoken difference between 1942 and 2002.

Obama just personifies and is the unwitting, artificial and basically incapable catalyst of this reality. He's certainly no Franklin Roosevelt.

So, where do we go from here?

Until we can get our Congress sufficiently goosed in their collective rear end to gain those necessary 67 [?] votes needed in the Senate to impeach this walking, speaking, golfing disaster, we're sitting ducks for our infiltrated and continuously penetrating Muslim enemy.

At some point, these vote-searching Congressmen and -women need to be torn away from their perpetual campaigning-for-tenure efforts and formed into a solid pro-America bipartisan unity against our Muslim enemy.

But nobody remembers 1942 anymore. I do. The contrast between these two Democrat administrations is sickening.

I wonder how many lives and how much treasure will be squandered with these war-like plays until we return to what we know works. WWII was the last war that settled accounts and national interests definitively, at least for a while.
The most ridiculous concept ever devised was "winning of hearts and minds." Does anyone here in the US really believe we would give our hearts and minds to any invading nation? So stupidly self-evident only liberals would believe such a thing. Never enter into war lightly, never without a very specific desired outcome, and never, ever anything less than all-in. The next WW is shaping up as a result of all these shooting exercises and it's gonna be a doozy. And sadly, thanks to the current administration, it may be the first to reach our shores.

Being a Brit paper, while they cover things the American media will not; they missed a couple of details:

1) the arrest warrant was based on the word of a "Confidential Informant" who said that he had purchased meth at the house in the past.

2) the no-knock was based on the CI claiming that the subject of the warrant had been seen with an AK-47 some months before.

3) reports from the local Atlanta media are that the child and his mother were there, not visiting relatives; but because they had lost their house in a fire a day or so previously, and that the subject of the warrant had given them a place to stay until they got sorted out. This does not rule out that the mother and the subject may have been related.

4) Speaking as a retired Peace Officer, the use of unnamed CI's should trigger a due diligence requirement, that if such use causes injury or death to innocent parties at police hands, or ends up raiding either the wrong address or a party not related to the crime that was the cause of the raid; that the officers involved and especially the supervisor(s) who approved going for the no knock warrant be subject to both civil and criminal penalties. And that if they raid an uninvolved person by accident or lack of due diligence, that said person be held legally harmless for defending him/her self from what appears to them to be an unprovoked assault on their home.

Subotai, While I appreciate your due diligence requirement, I have a more fundamental question. Why are we allowing any armed no-notice break-in to any residence to capture and if circumstance call for it to kill anyone? Further, we have the means to do sufficient undetected surveillance to know exactly who is inside, where, and what they are doing before any such raid where innocents will be put in jeopardy. Why aren't we doing that instead of buying more body armor, more powerful military weapons, and armored military assault vehicles for police? The ONLY time an operation such as no-knock assault which inherently puts everyone involved at high risk of injury or death should be authorized is to save lives of innocents who are in immanent danger of being harmed. Cops should NEVER play Rambo; that type of stuff only works in the movies. In real life, ALL assaults cause collateral damage and loss of life is amongst them.

RED EYED WOLVES

Barack Obama, by incompetence or design, has loosed the dogs of war upon a United States military he has, by sinister or ideological design, defanged in the face of danger. Only these are not dogs, they are wolves. And one night the red eyed wolves will come. They always do.

We stir uneasily in sleep
How quiet is the night
As in the dark the red eyes creep
The quarry now in sight
Obama though still sleeps serene
No worries on his mind
Not like that Bush, his hands are clean
From leading from behind
The red eyes, silent as the breeze
Proceed with noiseless leaps
To scoop Ukraine, the China seas
While Barry soundly sleeps
The red eyed wolf is never sate
His hunger satisfied
And soon upon us is our fate
The red eyes at our side
And slavering they state the terms
Surrender or you die
To furnish food for maggot worms
As in piled dead you lie
