The ability of certain politicians to live a caviar lifestyle while remaining true to their proletarian goals is a skill that should excite admiration in all. Take the new French President Francois Hollande. Hollande, who heads the French Socialist Party, has three homes on the Riviera, and is living with a beautiful former journalist, Valérie Trierweiler.

Hollande is described by the Guardian as ” a moderate, jovial, moped-riding Joe Average”. But in addition to Trierweiler, who is quite an eyeful, is quite able to nominate his wife — they are still married — Segolene Royale — yet another eyeful — to his cabinet, making her the “most powerful woman in France”.

What is it about men on the Left that allows them to do things which clenched, non-moped riding bigots cannot? Consider Mitt Romney, the job killing vampire. According to a second hand quote from a dead man, Romney, bullied someone in high school. Who could even think of voting for a man like that?

What would happen if Romney, a rich man in his own right, were found to have 3 homes on the Riviera and lived with a journalist? He would probably be visited by the same righteous outrage as descended on Paul Ryan for drinking a $350 bottle of wine.

Susan Feinberg, an associate business professor at Rutgers, was at Bistro Bis celebrating her birthday with her husband that night. When she saw the label on the bottle of Jayer-Gilles 2004 Echezeaux Grand Cru Ryan’s table had ordered, she quickly looked it up on the wine list and saw that it sold for an eye-popping $350, the most expensive wine in the house along with one other with the same pricetag …

“We were just stunned,” said Feinberg, who e-mailed TPM about her encounter later the same evening. “I was an economist so I started doing the envelope calculations and quickly figured out that those two bottles of wine was more than two-income working family making minimum wage earned in a week.”

She was outraged that Ryan was consuming hundreds of dollars in wine while Congress was in the midst of intense debates over whether to cut seniors’ safety net, and she didn’t know whether Ryan or his companions was going to pay for the wine and whether the two men were lobbyists. She snapped a few shots with her cell phone to record the wine purchase.

Feinberg’s anger was justified. After all, Ryan was not a socialist and therefore not entitled to consume expensive wine. If he had been then it would be alright. Just ask Elle Macpherson. “Supermodel Elle Macpherson told shock jock Howard Stern Tuesday that she’s pulling for Barack Obama to be reelected. ‘I’m living in London and I’m socialist,’ she told her host.”

As President Obama showed, it’s all in the way you carry yourself. Bill Whittaker at CBS wrote, “Barely a day after announcing his support for same-sex marriage, President Obama sought to use it as a powerful political tool … After an event in Seattle, the president’s second stop was George Clooney’s house in Los Angeles, where movie stars and campaign donors with deep pockets were waiting … The star of the evening, the president, arrived at LAX in his private jet, Air Force One, then choppered off to join his soiree — a $40,000-a-plate fundraiser.”

How cool is that?

Conservatives should just face facts. Men on the Left have just got it. Naturally and instinctively. And as such, are able to do things that stuck-up gun-clinging, Bible-toting right wingers can’t. It’s been that way for as long as anyone has paid attention. In 1964 Joan Baez and her sisters sat for a poster titled “Girls Say Yes To Boys Who Say No”.

The poster was created to combat the idea that draft resistance was unmanly, and openly suggested that woman who opposed the military draft should become involved with men who resisted it.

The posters are now sought-after cultural artefacts, and are rare in good condition. The few examples available through professional vintage poster dealers have been known to sell for between $1,000 – $2,000.

After all, what woman in her right mind would say yes to someone stupid enough to fight the North Vietnamese Army in government issue birth-control glasses? The message is clear. If you want to be a loser in life — and be considered Bull Connor’s brother whatever else you do — be a conservative. The fact that Bull Connor himself was a Democrat is irrelevant. Connor was uncool and therefore must have been a Republican.
