Do Democrats Now Realize They’re Screwed?

As I previously noted, when it was announced that Joe Biden was going to deliver previously unscheduled remarks in the wake of the damning special counsel report, I was convinced he was going to announce his intention to drop out of the race.

The report made it very clear that Joe Biden was guilty of willfully retaining and disclosing classified materials as a private citizen, but that he would not face charges because he presents himself as an “elderly man with a poor memory,” and it would be difficult to convince a jury that he is guilty of a serious felony because to commit such a crime “requires a mental state of willfulness." According to the report, Biden couldn't remember when he was vice president or when his son Beau died.

In short, he's not mentally competent enough to stand trial. Well, if he's too senile to stand trial, it stands to reason that he's not competent enough to be president. Of course, Biden thought it was a good idea to speak to the nation Thursday night and angrily deny the report's assessment of his mental faculties, but few others did.

“Whatever language you use, I have not had a single person say, ‘Well, this really worked out well,’” famed Democrat strategist James Carville told The Hill. “Obviously this has been a bad 48 hours here.”

“We’re officially in Hail Mary mode here,” he added.

Another strategist offered a similarly bleak assessment.

“We’re at a DefCon One situation,” the anonymous strategist told the paper. “I think between the catastrophic Special Counsel report and the more catastrophic press conference that followed, and the even more catastrophic attacking of the Special Counsel for the report, they are magnifying and dismissing the concerns that the overwhelming majority of Americans have about Biden — including a lot of Democrats.”

“I slept like a baby last night," Paul Begala, the former strategist for Bill Clinton quipped on CNN. "I woke up every two hours and wet the bed. This is terrible for Democrats. And anybody with a functioning brain knows that.”

Now, according to a report from the New York Post, Democrats are now wishing there was a way to change their party's 2024, but it's not only too late, but replacing him with Kamala Harris doesn't help because she polls worse than Biden.

"A well-placed Democratic operative said Friday that it is 'realistic' Harris may replace Biden as a result of his diminished capabilities, though the person added that they suspected that the party’s slate of candidates would be the same as four years ago," the Post reported. "Worries about Biden’s health are reflected in polling showing a majority of Americans share concerns about his age. But veteran Democratic operatives told The Post there is little chance Biden will be replaced at this stage of the race, except by his own volition."

“The president owns the DNC lock, stock and barrel,” Democrat strategist Brad Bannon told the paper. “The only way the DNC will have an opportunity to pick a nominee is if Joe Biden decides to step down.”

Biden's defiant reaction to the report made it very clear that he has no intention of doing so. Had he simply chosen not to seek a second term, it would have created an open primary that likely would have taken Kamala Harris out of the running. But it's too late for that now.

Democrats really are screwed.
