Cecil the Lion: Idol for a Child-Killing Culture

We’re better than the people who came before us. That’s the built-in claim embraced by the evolutionary paradigm. We’re more evolved. We’re more developed. We’re more sophisticated. We’re smarter and more capable. We would never suffer atrocities like slavery or human sacrifice. Such horrors are relics of the past, or at least tucked away in the darkest corners of the third world.

The formal term for such assumptions is “the historian’s fallacy,” defined as “when one assumes that decision makers of the past viewed events from the same perspective and having the same information as those subsequently analyzing the decision.” The worst application of the historian’s fallacy occurs when people judge the actions of God recorded in the Old Testament.

Commonly, whenever a debate regarding religion lasts beyond a certain point, someone will point to the violence commanded by the biblical God. He sent the Israelites to wipe out entire nations. How could such a God be good?

The question is asked from a presumption about the circumstances. These nations whom God wished destroyed were upright, peaceful people, we’re to assume. They minded their own business until this vicious Old Testament God came along and unjustly destroyed them.

In truth, however, the nations which God used the Israelites to destroy were the Nazis of their day. The Canaanites were a vile culture that threw their own children into pits of fire as sacrifice to nature and fertility gods, such as Baal or Moloch. They were irredeemable. Their destruction was essential to the survival of God’s people, not just physically, but culturally. If the influence of these heathens survived (as it did due to Israelite disobedience), then it would corrupt the Israelite culture (as it did, again due to Israelite disobedience).

Fast-forward to today. We’re so much better than the Canaanites, right? We don’t cast our children into pits of fire as sacrifice to pagan gods. Right? Consider some evidence on the next page…

In a Facebook post, social commentator Matt Walsh breaks down the content of a fourth undercover video revealing the vile practices of Planned Parenthood. He writes:

The second part of the video shows [Savita] Ginde [, the VP of a massive Planned Parenthood abortuary,] dissecting an unborn child. She laughs and jokes throughout the process, and makes light of it as the camera catches the sound of a skull being cracked open by a knife. She talks about the different organs they can extract from the babies, saying often the brains come out intact. She then says they like to sell the parts individually because that way they can “see how much [money] they can get out of it.”

At the end, a Planned Parenthood tech is sifting through the severed parts, apparently notices the child’s reproductive organs, and shouts gleefully, “it’s a boy!”

Everything I just described should enrage you. If it does not — if that dead lion ticks you off more than Planned Parenthood butchers laughing over a vat of dismembered baby limbs — you are a deeply disturbed and troubled person.

The dead lion Walsh refers to is Cecil the Lion, a research animal that was allegedly lured out of a nature preserve and shot by a Minnesota dentist hunting in Zimbabwe. Writing for Real Clear Politics, Heather Wilhelm summarizes the state of global outrage over Cecil’s “murder”:

But never mind. Let’s talk about Cecil, a lion that has emerged as a benevolent, finely sketched cartoon creature in the global moral imagination, setting our hyperactive but wildly misfiring outrage meter into a wild, chaotic spin…

Earlier:

Animal rights group PETA, for instance, declared that Dr. Palmer should be “extradited, charged, and preferably hanged” for killing such a beloved creature. In a heated op-ed, former CNN host Piers Morgan proposed a new sport, “Big Human Hunting,” in which he would kill Dr. Palmer with a crossbow, torture him, and skin him alive, which sounds normal if you just had a brain transplant from, say, Jeffrey Dahmer.

Actress Debra Messing argued for revoking Dr. Palmer’s citizenship; Sharon Osborne, who is married to a man who once bit the head off a bat, called for the eradication of Palmer’s home, business, and money.

A petition submitted on the official White House website to extradite the hunter to Zimbabwe quickly garnered the number of signatures necessary to trigger an official response, which the White House is preparing. Minnesota Congresswoman Betty McCollum, among several other politicians, instantly jumped on the bandwagon, calling for an investigation into the lion’s death. Personages from Jimmy Kimmel to Sharon Osbourne have piled on the hunter. Meanwhile, the White House announced they would oppose any effort to defund Planned Parenthood.

All this supports the conclusion that our culture has descended to the level of the ancient Canaanites. We may not have idol-strewn pits of fire into which we toss our children. But we do have around 680 abortion clinics peppered throughout the country where mothers go to kill 1.21 million unborn children every year with the sanction of both law and culture. They’re even subsidized by our government.

We may not bow before or pray to graven images of bulls or owls. But we do rend robes over lions, seals, and dung beetles. We worship the environment as a divine entity superior to ourselves, instead of viewing it as a created gift which supports our lives.

We’ve reached a point of divine judgment where God has chosen to give us over to our debased nature. The Apostle Paul warned of such judgment in Romans, writing:

For although they knew God, they neither glorified him as God nor gave thanks to him, but their thinking became futile and their foolish hearts were darkened. Although they claimed to be wise, they became fools and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images made to look like a mortal human being and birds and animals and reptiles.

Therefore God gave them over in the sinful desires of their hearts to sexual impurity for the degrading of their bodies with one another. They exchanged the truth about God for a lie, and worshiped and served created things rather than the Creator—who is forever praised. Amen.

Because of this, God gave them over to shameful lusts. Even their women exchanged natural sexual relations for unnatural ones. In the same way the men also abandoned natural relations with women and were inflamed with lust for one another. Men committed shameful acts with other men, and received in themselves the due penalty for their error.

Furthermore, just as they did not think it worthwhile to retain the knowledge of God, so God gave them over to a depraved mind, so that they do what ought not to be done. They have become filled with every kind of wickedness, evil, greed and depravity. They are full of envy, murder, strife, deceit and malice. They are gossips, slanderers, God-haters, insolent, arrogant and boastful; they invent ways of doing evil; they disobey their parents; they have no understanding, no fidelity, no love, no mercy. Although they know God’s righteous decree that those who do such things deserve death, they not only continue to do these very things but also approve of those who practice them.

This passage stands as evidence of the divine inspiration of God’s Word. It describes our modern society, reflected in today’s headlines, in nauseating but wholly accurate detail. We have become a Canaanite nation. As such, we deserve the “due penalty for [our] error” which will continue to manifest.

Read Romans in its entirety. It’s a quick and compelling read. It offers not just an assessment of our vile condition, but a clear and convicting explanation of the way out offered by God.
