Take It From Me: Fitness Is Easier Than You Think

Several months ago I wrote that, after years of being a couch potato, I decided to start working out. The accompanying photo (of me in the gym, for the first time after all these years of inactivity) said it all:

Yeah, I know what you’re thinking: that looks horrible. Well, true, but I can guarantee you that I felt even worse than I looked. I literally felt like I was dying three times during the workout and my personal trainer told me afterwards that he was seriously considering calling an ambulance because I looked like I would pass out. He wasn’t exaggerating: that’s exactly how I felt. I was exhausted and saw all kinds of strange spots in front of me; black and white. My vision was all blurred. I had to sit down for a 5 minutes break every now and then to prevent myself from falling down (and not getting up).

Sad — pathetic even — but I’ve got good news: in the months since (the photo was taken two months ago), a lot has changed. I’ve lost 10 kilograms (which is something like 22 pounds) in body weight, while I’ve gained some serious muscles. Click to the next page to see the photo I took yesterday…

Okay, okay, I know: I’m not exactly the new and improved version of Arnold Schwarzenegger just yet, but hey, it’s a significant improvement. I’ve really lost weight and am building some serious muscles. My personal trainer told me I’d look good two to three months from now, and I’ll look fantastic in six months. When I first got started I had a hard time believing him, but I’m now confident he’s right.

And that brings me to an important point: many people think that working out (hard!) is extremely difficult. I thought the same. However, I can tell you I was 100% wrong. It’s not difficult at all; it’s great fun and incredibly inspiring. Trust me, nothing beats pushing yourself to the limit, stepping on the scale and seeing you’ve lost one more kilo (2.2 more pounds), or looking in the mirror and seeing that you’re going from couch potato to bodybuilder extraordinaire. Well, okay, the latter may be a bit of an exaggeration, but I’m sure you get my drift.

What’s more, after working out for a couple of weeks, you’ll suddenly notice other great changes: you sleep better and your energy levels are way higher than before. The result is that everything in life becomes easier.

So, if you didn’t join me last time I wrote about my weight-loss journey, please do so now and let’s become healthy together.
