How can conservatives conquer Hollywood? PJ Lifestyle editor Dave Swindle argued in March 2014 that it was through studying how technological changes transformed the culture in the age of classic Hollywood. In this ongoing series mid-day Monday-Friday at PJ Lifestyle he highlights animated short films from the 1920s, '30s and 1940s, beginning with an emphasis on Walt Disney's Silly Symphonies. What are some of your favorite cartoons of the era? Please leave URLs in the comments of shorts you'd like to see featured in the future. Image illustration courtesy shutterstock / Ismagilov.

That cartoon was the second most glaring example of fish rape I've ever seen.

When we speak of obscure precode cartoons that might surprise people nowadays, "The Old Man of the Mountain" comes to mind. With Betty Boop AND Cab Calloway AND possible inspiration for dialogue in Nightmare Before Christmas.

(Note - Danny Elfman often referenced Cab Calloway; for example, catch Elfman sometime when the kids aren't around in The Forbidden Zone (1980), where he plays the Devil and sings "Minnie the Moocher.")

Remarkably I had seen it before.
I saw nothing objectionable at all. Mermaids have uncovered breasts. Everyone knows that.
Brilliant cartoon. Would it be even possible to make a similar cartoon today? Pixar is good but this stuff was art.

The pirate attack on the teeny little mermaid was nasty indeed.

My suggestion, not Silly Symphony, is Disney's Lend a Paw (1941 I think) in which Pluto is coached by his devil self and his angel self whether to "save that kitty!" http://youtu.be/m9Z97al26C8
