Terry Holdbrooks Jr. is a former Guantanamo guard who, he says, was so impressed with the faith and perseverance of the detainees that he converted to Islam in 2003. Now he makes a living traveling around the country telling dubious and lurid tales of Guantanamo tortures for the Muslim Legal Fund of America, and explaining why he converted. “I had all the freedom in the world,” he says. “But I was waking up unhappy while these men were in cages, smiling and praying five times a day.”

For Holdbrooks, the contrast couldn’t have been more stark. Before his conversion (and for some time after it, until he rededicated himself to Islam), he was drinking, smoking, using drugs, and indulging in promiscuity – in other words, he was a relatively typical, rudderless early twentieth-century American male. The Army gave him an honorable discharge in 2005 for a “generalized personality disorder.” But then he renewed his Islamic commitment, and, according to the New York Daily News, “found discipline in prayer.”

Discipline. The Islam4theWorld website explains: “Islam is a complete way of living. Unlike other religions, Islam is not a religion consisting of a few rituals, which are to be practiced occasionally. Islam covers every aspect of life.” This is no exaggeration. The Union of Islamic World Students elucidates exactly how Islam covers every aspect of life:

Islam has rules of etiquette and manners covering every aspect of life. These are applicable for the whole society, the old and the young, men and women. These manners cover even minor acts such as entering or exiting a bathroom, posture while sitting and cleaning oneself.

The same site then approvingly quotes a hadith in which “one of the polytheists” ridiculed the Muslims, telling one of them: “Your prophet has taught you everything, even the manners of going to the toilet.” The Muslim, however, affirmed that that was indeed true:

Yes, the Prophet forbade us from facing the Qibla [the direction toward Mecca] when urinating or relieving oneself. The Prophet asked us not to use the right hand when cleaning ourselves and to use at least three stones for cleaning.

Islam, indeed, has a rule for everything that a human being could imaginably do, with the horrifying punishments of hellfire awaiting those who fail to observe them. So why would a smokin’, tokin’ American boy choose a belief system in which everything he does is regulated, and he has to devote the bulk of his time learning the arcane rules of Allah for brushing his teeth, trimming his beard, and how many stones to use when going to the bathroom?

It seems the Muslim readers are onto PJ and Robert Spencer. All the "likes" for Haqq and Mohammed!

Meanwhile, I'll simply say that if Holdbrooks had been guarding Scientologists, he would have converted to Scientology.

Islam is not a religion at all, it is a TERRORIST ORGANIZATION disguised as a religion! Muhammad was illiterate; could not read or write! All of his information he put into the Quoran was derived from the Christian & Jews that traveled near his home and he just used what they said and then made up his book using others to write it all down.

Alla is just an IDOL sitting in the sand at Mecca that Muhammad stole from the Arabs because he needed a god to call his terrorist organization a religion. Muhammad was and never was a prophet of anything. There is not a single prophecy in the Quoran, not one. The Quoran has not references to love your neighbor, but it has over 100 commands to kill the infidels! Islam is abusive to women and has little respect for them. Islamist take children 2 & 3 years old from their parents for money and put them in schools that teach them to be suicide bombers!

For a person to convert to this stupidity is absurd. This guy must be brain dead or just ignorant to buy into this stupid FALSE religion.

The author of this article Robert Spencer is a hate monger. Shame on you Robert, when are you going to move on with your life? It’s funny that you stated that polygamy, wife beating etc. attract people to convert to Islam but the reality is that most people converting to Islam are women these days. You stated that Islam "offers absolutes and certainties not within an atmosphere that fosters maturity and discernment, but within the context of “slavery to Allah” – a slavery that robs the slave of everything that would make him a functioning adult". The Quran is full of laws and rules that make people the most ethical and functioning adults towards society. For example, the Quran states that a person who receives money from special interest groups in order to slander another religion receives eternal damnation, it’s just a shame that people like you have sold their souls to evil, and is this what your definition of a functioning adult is? Someone who will do anything to earn a dollar? You have never mentioned one good thing about the Quran or the works of Muslims, you concentrate on only the extremists and problems within the Muslim community in the hopes of making the general public believe that this Islam is evil. You and your associates cannot stop the spread of Islam no matter how much money you spend and what deceptive practices you use. You are a sick person who needs help.

You perhaps should study a little history; you seem to have made up a fictional European history.

You may have missed it, but of the major religions of the world, only one is at war, in one place or another will all of the others. Does that suggest to you that it is a 'religion of peace'? Or the 'one true' religion?

Frankly, religions are a necessary evil without which people tend to believe even more vicious and hurtful things, like socialism for example. However, Islam doesn't seem to be much saner than the vicious garbage that the Aztecs used to justify continuously attacking their neighbors to insure they had enough sacrifices on their bloody pyramids.

Compared to Islamists, Christians are much better neighbors for us unbelievers.

I encourage all the Islam bashers out there, especially those who consider themselves Christian, to explore their own history. Do you know that basically the entire history of Europe, through WWII, along with the colonization of the rest of the world by Europe, is basically a misuse of God's name and the "Church"? How many hundreds of millions were killed by the endless European wars because "God was on my side"? Or how many more indigenous civilizations were wiped out either by war, famine or disease, by the Europeans who had "God on their side"? For starters look up Massacre at Verdun if you are willing to open your eyes. If you are not then continue your parroting of Fox News and other propaganda while you mire in hypocrisy.

I'm not writing this to justify the misuse of Islam by some tribal and evil elements, and by some misguided zealots. There are bad people who misuse all religions for power and evil. If you really look into the core of the religions you will see true Monotheism on one hand and Polytheism on the other that claims God was a man who died at the hands of a bronze-age civilization. In your heart of hearts which one is true?

And the real threat is not global jihad, it's the sincere, God-fearing Christians who are kept from the true religion by lies and propaganda like the filth presented by Spencer et al.

Islam is not a religion. It is an ideology and the Koran provides the checklist (all ideology's have a checklist) for the believer's world view and tells him how he must use that checklist to function in his immediate life here and now.

Sounds like Lindbergh explaining his allure with the Nazis: "The organized vitality of Germany was what most impressed me: the unceasing activity of the people, and the convinced dictatorial direction to create the new factories, airfields, and research laboratories..." --Autobiography of Values, Charles Lindbergh.

“Lindbergh’s interest in Hitlerism is now thinly concealed.” --The Kansas City Journal

All this gentleman lacks is Lindbergh's (& Islam's) antisemitism.

Interestingly, during WWII, Arab Muslims supported and admired the Nazis, too.

"Before his conversion... he was drinking, smoking, using drugs, and indulging in promiscuity – in other words, he was a relatively typical, rudderless early twentieth-century American male."

"As a teenager, Holdbrooks had searched for truths in several different religions. He came to Guantanamo convinced that all monotheistic religions were evil."

Sounds more like a member of "Occupy" than someone serving in our military.

But there is the other side of the coin. Islam does not just appeal to the Lost, its attraction is to the predator as well. Islam condones and commands rape, robbery and plunder of all non-Muslims. Behavior which was pretty much universally condemned suddenly became virtuous when it was inflicted upon the infidels. How nice that is. It provides the way whereby indulging in evil acts you serve the will of God. Its a perfect religion for sociopaths. And that's what is was.

You too can rob, rape, and plunder in the name of God. All you need do is send 10% of the proceeds back to the Prophet of God. (and yes, when Mohammed the /s Prophet /s was alive this was required) and all your crimes will stand to get you into heaven.

The so-called Prophet Mohammed was the biggest con-man in history. His evil lives down to this day.

People with no anchor in reality are easy targets. Holdbrooks is one of those people and maybe someday he will wake up and face reality and his life.
Islam is a cradle to grave ideology with all decisions made for the believer by his Imam, the Koran and Shariah.
Not having to think and make moral judgements individually one at a time sometimes cripples those with poor judgement.
Holdbrooks can now follow the path of Islam without any thought or conflict, no my cup of tea, but let me say good luck in your future and hopefully we will never meet in a conflict situation......

Islam in its extremist versions is very problematic to the denizens of PJ Lifestyle because it has so much in common with their own outlook. It is just as hysterically upset about liberal secularism, just as critical of moral relativism, just as intolerant, and also as hypersensitive to criticism, because, like fundamentalist Islam, it is also rooted in feelings of inferiority and injured pride. A strategic alliance between these forms of irrationalism is impossible, however, for the same reason that folks who believe that monarchy is the best form of government have trouble agreeing. You not only have to have similar ideas: you've got to settle on the same dynasty, or, in this instance, the same God.

We can be grateful that the crazies of this world have so much trouble getting along together.

Jimbo,

If you ever get a chance to leave the apartment for a breath of air, you might give a little consideration that unlike the denizens of PJ Lifestyle, the 'extremist' Muslims are pulling the Obama lever with you, sport.

Yes, I feel inferior every time I look at the Moon. Cuz it was the liberally uplifted gay, minority, female who helmed that mission.

At least in your bizarro mind.

Seeking a rather shopworn paradox (that our revulsion signifies some shameful attraction we can't internalize) you end up only in incoherence. This is a pretty simple issue. Islam's structured hostility to and fear of individuality represents everything true liberals should oppose, and which the only true liberals left in our world (conservatives and libertarians) in reality do oppose. In fact, it is the Left enabling this theocratic fascism, even here in America -- which is also seemingly but not really a paradox.

Rather than argue the merits and shortcomings of Islam vis-a-vis Christianity, which should be obvious to anyone of fair mind, let me just say from the secular sense that Islam and Sharia Law unlike Christianity, is incompatible with being governed by the U.S. Constitution.

Period.
