Before Mr. Obama first ran for the White House in 2008, he famously wrote, “I serve as a blank screen, on which people of vastly different political stripes project their own views,” perhaps the most honest words to ever appear under his imprimatur. He certainly was a blank LCD screen onto which the talented Photoshop artists of various high-profile magazines worked their magic to transform him into the second coming of FDR, as well as George Washington, or plopped onto the same stage as Lincoln. Or simply the second coming itself.
The apogee of such unfettered Obama Worship was undoubtedly the January 2010 issue of Golf Digest, which compared Obama to Tiger Woods. Unfortunately, in-between when that issue went to print and when it hit the streets, the news of Tiger Woods’ extramarital affair broke, forever shattering the untouchable, squeaky-clean, beyond reproach image the media willingly crafted for him. And concurrently, Obama’s feckless performance (“shout out!”) during the Fort Hood terrorist attack, followed less than two months later by the abortive Christmas panty bomber incident had both occurred. The combination of events had left both Tiger and Obama to appear much more flawed than the hagiographic (read: lickspittle) prose in that magazine by Thomas Friedman, Joe Queenan, and other members of the left’s palace guard would indicate.
As the Chicago Sun-Times noted in December of 2009:
As if President Obama weren’t having enough issues lately, Afghanistan escalation, dropping public opinion numbers, the Nobel Peace Prize, etc., Now comes the left field oddity he probably never could have predicted: Tiger Woods.
The January Golf Digest cover story, 10 Tips Obama can Take From Tiger, was written over the summer and the issue went to press in November before Tiger’s world fell apart, but it’s still sure to be fodder for late-night jokes for a time.
An interesting quote from the issue:
“Woods is a good role model … because he has always been able to pull himself together after setbacks. Woods never does anything that would make himself look ridiculous.”
Three years after envisioning it, at last Golf Digest’s Obama-Tiger Tiger Beat fantasy has finally comes true, according to the Daily Caller:
President Barack Obama is spending Sunday hitting the links with Golfer Tiger Woods in Florida, according to one report.
“The President is arriving at The Floridian range. Awaiting is Tiger Woods and club owner Jim Crane. Historic day in golf. Their first round,” Tim Rosaforte, a senior writer Golf World/Golf Digest, reported on Twitter Sunday.
In deference to Mr. Obama, Golf Digest portrayed Tiger as caddying on their fantasy cover from the beginning of 2010. I wonder which member of the MSM hopped off “the party bus” to play that role today?
(By the way, remember back in late August, when MSNBC declared that likening Obama to Woods was racist? Having really caddied for Obama last year, if the MSM still remembers that one, rest assured that they’re having quite a chuckle about it.)
