The Democrats Are Gollum

The Democrats are Gollum and the press is their ring of invisibility. Or maybe I should call it the presshussss.

I don’t know whether J.R.R. Tolkien was inspired by the Ring of Gyges legend when he wrote Lord of the Rings, but a scholar of his quality would have known his Plato well. In Plato’s Republic, Plato’s brother Glaucon tells the story. A shepherd Gyges found a magic ring that made him invisible. Because he could no longer be seen, he discovered he could commit any crime without consequence and so ultimately murdered his way to becoming king of Lydia. Glaucon concludes:

No man would keep his hands off what was not his own when he could safely take what he liked out of the market, or go into houses and lie with any one at his pleasure, or kill or release from prison whom he would, and in all respects be like a God among men.

Socrates doesn’t fully agree with this and, in fact, in Tolkien, the invisibility ring seems to have some added power of seduction and evil that strips the wearer of his will to justice. But the point remains the same: man’s nature is twisted; broken. Hidden from society, protected from punishment, we are all very likely to descend into evil.

Thus the Democrats, and the left in general.

Last week, a leader of the Democrat front group NAACP, Rachel Dolezal, was outed as being, not black as she pretended, but white as the driven pre-global-warming snow. Now, aside from having the benefit of making me laugh like Santa Claus until tears of merriment gathered in the corners of my twinkling eyes, this story also constituted a collision of identity politics with trans-identity politics that exposed both for the moral nonsense they are. This is a major problem for the Democrat party if honestly reported. If a person cannot be protected from criticism by his race or gender, both Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton are in big trouble.

The story exploded on Twitter, taking the top three hashtags. What was the liberal media’s reaction? As my friend Steven Crowder reported on his Louder With Crowder website, every major left wing news outlet left the story completely uncovered for four or five hours. HuffPo, Salon, Slate, Vox — only the absurdity of their silence amidst the laughter of the entire nation finally forced them to grudgingly report the truth.

But that’s nothing — nothing, I mean, compared to the way the Gyges media transformed themselves into a ring of invisibility around the IRS scandal, the Fast and Furious scandal, the Benghazi scandal and on and on. They smalled and buried these stories — even to the point of forcing one of the best investigative reporters in the country, Sharyl Attkisson, to quit her post at CBS so that she could be free to report the truth.

As for the habitual and off-handed corruption of presumptive Democrat presidential nominee Hillary Clinton, conservatives take some small satisfaction when mainstream outlets deign to report on how she sold our State Department to foreign powers then burned the evidence. But don’t kid yourself. If Clinton actually wins the nomination, the ring of invisibility will reform on her finger and she’ll be gone, baby, gone. Don’t believe me? It’s already started. Take a look at this piece of Gyges journalism by Gail Sheehy, in which Hillary becomes a “kickass grandma” with a “fierce new brand of feminism” and a few “tech travails,” rather than what she is, one of the most corrupt machine-style pols operating today, vagina and all.

The media ring of invisibility is having exactly the effect on the Democrats that Tolkien — and Glaucon — would have predicted. The Democrat party has become arrogantly off-hand and open in its unprincipled dishonesty and hypocrisy. Obama plays the race card whenever he’s criticized even while blacks suffer economically under his policies and his words and deeds inflame crime and racial violence in poor black neighborhoods. Hillary goes around mouthing off about income equality while making more money in a twenty minute speech than most of us make in our lifetimes. Harry Reid slanders Mitt Romney on the Senate floor and shrugs it off when he’s caught. Al Gore guzzles gas and makes a fortune from oily Qatar while lecturing us on our carbon footprint. The entire Democrat party destroys the achievements of our military in the middle east, plunges the region into a sea of blood, and then says, “Well, it’s Bush’s fault for going in there in the first place.”

The Democrats have transformed themselves into a party of open lies and corruption, because they know they can count on their presshusssss to keep the truth invisible.
