United Launch Alliance is holding its summer Student Rocket Launch in Pueblo in a couple weeks, and again I’m taking my oldest son to watch the show. Only six, he already has one perfect model rocket launch-and-recovery under his belt, with more to come.
Anyway, this year’s lineup is even more impressive than last year’s.
I should reiterate that these beasts are built and launched entirely by high school kids. The big one will reach an altitude of 9,000 feet. If it’s like the monster rocket from last year, it could go much higher — but the FAA said “Nyet!” They kept it under the ceiling, not by using smaller engines or a shorter burn. Instead, the kids attached retro rocket motors, set to fire a few seconds after launch to act as brakes. How cool is that?
Can’t wait to see what’s in store this year.
