John Kerry gets some anonymous endorsements…
“I’ve met foreign leaders who can’t go out and say this publicly, but boy they look at you and say, ‘You’ve got to win this, you’ve got to beat this guy, we need a new policy,’ things like that,” he said.
…and demonstrates he has a tin ear for what will play well with voters in the general election.
“Chirac says he’d wave a white flag for John!” or “Kofi crazy for Kerry!” might go over well with left-leaning primary voters — but the primary race is over. What Kerry needs to do now is run like hell to the center, before Karl Rove can paint him into a left-wing corner.
Bragging about wink-and-nod endorsements from unnamed foreign leaders just makes Rove’s job easier. Voters who give a goddamn what they think of us in Berlin or Paris (or Tehran or Pyongyang, for that matter) are probably going to vote for Kerry anyway.
Here’s some free advice, John: The primary race is over, so stop playing to the base already and start running a general election campaign.
