Dairy Queen Employee Fired After Her Manager Mistook 'Moana' for 'Marijuana'

Last week, a Dairy Queen employee was fired after her manager misheard a customer’s order for a Moana and My Little Pony-themed cake, instead crafting a blue-and-green cake celebrating marijuana and My Little Pony. The mistake went viral online, and it appears the manager threw the employee under the bus, even though the manager seems to have been responsible.

Cassandra Walker, the employee, told USA Today her manager was responsible for misinterpreting the order when the mother of Kensli Davis called it in. Walker also said her manager approved the order.

In a Facebook post that went viral, Davis said she was satisfied with the cake, but she found the mix-up hilarious.

“I haven’t had a chance to tell y’all about our experience this weekend with my birthday cake. So my mama called and ordered me a cake telling them how much I loved Moana. (Because really I do) Well needless to say these people thought she said marijuana,” she wrote, adding three “laughing while crying” emojis. “That ice cream cake was still good though.”

As Davis’s Facebook post suggests, the family took it rather well.

Davis told CNN that her mom “was hysterically laughing. The whole family thought it was the funniest thing ever and said it would definitely [be] a birthday to remember.”

She also recalled speaking with Walker, the employee who made the cake. “The lady who made my cake was apologetic and offered to make another one. But the first one was so good we weren’t worried about it,” Davis said.

Yet it seems someone was worried about it. Walker was fired on Monday, even though the mistake was her manager’s decision.

“The manager stood behind me while I pulled the images off the internet,” Walker told USA Today. “She walked by as I decorated the cake. As I boxed the cake up, she was the one who walked it up to the front.” Yet it seems it was Walker who had to speak with the wronged customer.

Walker said she took the fall for her manager’s mistake, and it seems another store manager knew she was in the right. The second manager called Walker, offering her job back, but the employee declined.

“It’s not funny to me,” Walker told USA Today. Talk about it!
