On Sunday, Rep. Marsha Blackburn (R-Tenn.), the Republican candidate for U.S. Senate in Tennessee, called for a moment of silence for the victims of the Tree of Life synagogue shooting in Pittsburgh, Pa. on Saturday. A protester broke the silence, showing disrespect not just for the candidate, but for the victims of the shooting.
“Let’s take a moment and remember those who lost their lives in Pittsburgh and express our gratitude for the law enforcement who responded so beautifully,” Blackburn said. “A moment of silence.”
As the crowd went quiet and Blackburn bowed her head, a protester piped up — at the top of her lungs — “Marsha Blackburn is a white supremacist!”
The crowd erupted, with Blackburn supporters yelling at the protester, “Get out of here, get out!” and breaking into chants of “USA! USA!”
In an official statement, Blackburn condemned the protester as part of a “liberal angry mob.”
“The liberal angry mob made it clear they are active in Tennessee and will stop at nothing to disrupt civil political discourse,” the candidate declared. “They resisted law enforcement, and they interrupted a moment of silence for the victims in Pittsburgh.”
Thanks to the incitement of Rep. Maxine Waters (D-Calif.), Sen.. Cory Booker (D-N.J.), Hillary Clinton, and Eric Holder, protesters have disturbed Trump officials at home, shouted Republicans out of restaurants, and effectively took over the Hart Senate Office Building. This protester’s brazen interruption of Blackburn’s moment of silence may be the most disgusting act of “protest” yet, and all Americans should condemn it.
This moment represents the height of incivility. No matter your political views, you should not use them to so blatantly disrespect victims of a tragedy.
