Remember the Magna Carta? Few things supposedly define the Western world better than the idea that the law applies to everyone.
That’s why everyone was outraged when Brock Turner was sentenced to just six months for rape because the judge thought the young man had such a promising future. Following that sentencing, people were outraged across ideological lines. Libertarians and conservatives joined feminists and other progressives in dismay.
So, imagine my surprise when I hear nothing but crickets following the case of a young woman who stabbed her boyfriend. She may walk away without any jail time because of her promising future:
An Oxford University student who stabbed her boyfriend could be spared jail after a judge said she had an “extraordinary” talent for medicine.
Lavinia Woodward, 24, who studied at Christ Church College, Oxford, stabbed her Cambridge-educated boyfriend in the leg on December 30 last year following a row.
The pair had a drink and drug-fuelled argument, and Woodward punched and swiped at the victim with a bread knife.
She then stabbed the man before hurling a laptop, glass and a jam jar at him.
Prosecutor Cathy Olliver said Woodward met her ex-boyfriend on Tinder.
The pair had a row, and when he threatened to call Woodward’s mother, his then-girlfriend punched him before picking up a bread knife and stabbing him in the leg.
Multiple assaults on the man, including stabbing him with a deadly weapon.
Why is it that Woodward’s case hasn’t evoked the outrage that Turner’s did? The reason is that the perpetrator is a woman and the victim is a man.
Plain and simple. This doesn’t feed the narrative, so the media will choose to ignore it. Protesters will pass over the headline, looking for something else to “organize.” Evils can be tolerated by the progressives and social justice warriors if they don’t run afoul of the narrative.
Meanwhile, a man has been stabbed. The person responsible for it may well never see the inside of a cell because she happens to be seeking a certain career.
The Telegraph points out that she’ll never be a surgeon because she’s still got a criminal conviction. So what? Having a less-fulfilling job, something most of the world has to deal with, is equal to prison? Especially when men, or women with less-esteemed jobs, would have been sent to prison?
Good to know that if you’re female and talented, not only will you get a slap on the wrist, but the outraged left won’t even complain about it. Because social justice has nothing to do with justice.
