If horror films take advantage of our worst fears, then Jordan Peele’s new film Get Out (2017) tells us a whole lot about how he thinks black people feel about white people. Frankly, his bigotry isn’t particularly pleasant.
The trailer for Get Out appeared yesterday on Universal’s YouTube page. Check it out:
Ah … behold, the racial healing.
Last year, Peele told Variety:
People know me for my work in comedy, but now I’ll get to focus on my passion for writing and directing horror films. Like comedy, horror has an ability to provoke thought and further the conversation on real social issues in a very powerful way …
Get Out takes on the task of exploring race in America, something that hasn’t really been done within the genre since Night of the Living Dead 47 years ago. It’s long overdue.
So, Peele thinks this movie, with this trailer, is “exploring race in America”? Based on this, what might Peele actually believe about “race in America”?
Well, for starters, all cops are racist. Yeah, that false stereotype can’t have any disastrous consequences, can it?
Beyond that, Peele’s trailer presents most whites as viewing blacks as nothing more than low-skilled labor to be exploited against their will.
Well, a whole bunch of white people gave their lives to end that horror. In the 1860s. In 2016, Peele is inaccurately describing virtually every single white American by claiming they support slavery.
Remember The Stepford Wives? It touched on the idea that some men were not able to deal with women who didn’t want to be like June Cleaver. When the original was released, that was a prominent cultural issue, and the film touched a bit of a nerve because of that.
Get Out, however — at least with its trailer — presents a “white America” that simply does not exist. Peele isn’t exploring “race in America.” He’s spreading vicious, cynical lies about race in America.
For his own benefit.
Peele previously claimed the film was a satire. Really? For that to be true, this would need to be a movie that ridicules people who believe cops are racist and whites support slavery.
