Donald Trump has raised more than a few eyebrows with his declared intentions for prosecuting the War on Terror. Among them was a promise to rescind a ban on waterboarding put in place by President Barrack Obama, and to then go further by implementing “worse” methods of extracting information from terror suspects.
The plan hit a roadblock Sunday. From the Associated Press:
The director of the CIA says his spy agency will not engage in waterboarding or other so-called enhanced interrogation techniques even if ordered to by a future president.
CIA chief John Brennan tells NBC News that he will not agree to carry out such techniques because “this institution needs to endure.”
Trump has claimed that subordinates in the military would obey his orders as commander-in-chief, even if those orders contradict established norms and international law. Brennan’s preemptive defiance, albeit from the CIA and not the military, indicates that a future President Trump might find the process more complicated than he assumes.
