Last week Democrat Attorney General Mark Herring announced the state of Virginia would revoke conceal and carry reciprocity with 25 states.
There was no immediate reason to do so, as there has been no evidence of a rise in conceal permit holders from other states entering Virginia to engage in gun violence.
Herring said the other states do not meet Virginia standards of concealing a firearm. He said the changes were “commonsense.” In reality, the changes were the result of being unable to pass Second Amendment restrictions via the legislative branch of state government.
The Virginia General Assembly, controlled by Republicans, is set to begin a new session in a few weeks and they will take up Herring’s ridiculous new regulations. In January, Virginia lawmakers will consider a bill filed back in November that requires Virginia to recognize conceal permits from other states, reversing Herring’s anti-Second Amendment fiat.
Virginia state Senator Bill Carrico said, “A lot of the governor’s power is deferred to the General Assembly at that point and I’ll be getting with my collegues to circumvent everything this governor has done on this point. I have a budget amendment that I’m looking at to take away his executive protection unit. If he’s so afraid of guns, then I’m not going to surround him with armed state policemen.”
Amen. Michael Bloomberg has an armed protective detail and Bob Owens at Bearing Arms reports that Shannon Watts of Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America also has armed protection.
One important lesson here: we focus so much on national races, the presidency, and Senate and congressional campaigns, but it is critical to control, at the very least, the legislative branch at the state level. This is a perfect illustration as to why.
