Is It a Racial Divide? Or Simply a Very Partisan One?

We talk a lot about the racial divide in this country. It’s often joked that the best thing about the Obama administration was all the racial healing, followed immediately by laughter. Watch the media, and you might think we’re further away from Dr. King’s dream of a colorblind society than we have been since the Civil Rights Act was passed.

However, over at Townhall, Star Parker makes the case that it’s not as much of a racial divide as it is a partisan divide:

A new Quinnipiac University poll shows yet another perspective on the deep racial division in our country.

According to the poll, 86 percent of blacks compared to 50 percent of whites say that President Trump does not “respect people of color as much as he respects white people.”

However the partisan divide is even greater than the racial divide.

Ninety-one percent of Democrats compared to 12 percent of Republicans agree with the statement that President Trump is racially biased against people of color.

Bottom line: What we call a racial divide today is really a partisan divide.

Parker went on to blast Rep. John Lewis for his refusal to attend the opening of a new Civil Rights Museum in Mississippi simply because President Trump would be in attendance. “The leaders who fought in the 1960s for civil rights fought for freedom and against stereotyping any individual because of their race. … Freedom means living and thinking freely according one’s judgment and conscience. That is, blacks may have conservative as well as liberal views.”

As someone who is a minority in his own hometown, I know she is correct.

Many black Americans are deeply religious, oppose gay marriage due to their faith, do not agree with much of the social justice nonsense that has permeated American politics, and indicate a bias towards conservative causes in other ways. Yet Hillary Clinton garnered more than 68 percent of the vote in Dougherty County.

The black community has been used by the American Left. They are constantly told that Leftist policies are the only options for minorities, and told that people who oppose such policies do so because of racism. For example, if you don’t support affirmative action, it must be because you want to keep blacks away from education and job opportunities, and not because it does more harm than good while being unconstitutional.

America simply has moved past most of its former racism. The problem now is partisan politics taking advantage of that past.
