Is the Media Making Too Much of Jason Collins Coming Out as Gay?

Yesterday, professional basketball player Jason Collins revealed in Sports Illustrated that he was gay, thus becoming the first active player in any pro team sport to come out of the closet. Almost immediately, there was an outpouring of sympathetic and largely approving comments from the media. The story garnered headlines around the country and was a top story on most news websites.
