Former national security adviser Elliott Abrams isn’t a fan of the Obama administration’s new “deal” with Iran. Appearing on Fox News today, he said that President Barack Obama has become the latest hostage of Iran, a reference to the period in 1979-80 when the Iranians held 52 Americans hostage for 444 days.
Abrams noted that Obama has obviously sought a deal with Iran since 2009, both to cement his “legacy” and to repudiate the sanctions approach favored by the Bush administration. Now Obama has an additional reason to want a deal — to distract media from continually reporting on the manifest failures of Obamacare. Abrams also said that the new “deal” tells Iran that it can get away with lying and cheating. Coincidentally or not, that’s largely the same lesson that Barack Obama appears to have learned from his election and re-election to the presidency.
Update: The Washington Free Beacon reports that the deal isn’t even a deal yet.
The final details of a nuclear agreement signed over the weekend between Iran and Western nations will not actually go into effect until further negotiations take place at a later date, according to a senior administration official and sources on Capitol Hill.
Even as Iran and the P5+1 announced late Saturday night that they had reached a six-month interim deal that curbs Iran’s nuclear program while giving Tehran the ability to continue some uranium enrichment activities, it is now clear that the six-month freeze will not go into effect until the P5+1 negotiators and Iran agree to a final plan to implement the interim agreement.
“Technical details to implement the Joint Plan of Action must be finalized before the terms of the Plan begin,” a senior administration official told the Washington Free Beacon on Monday. “The P5+1 and Iran are working on what the timeframe is.”
