Poll: Santorum Wouldn't Get Lion's Share If Newt Dropped Out

A Gallup poll released Friday indicated that former Sen. Rick Santorum (R-Pa.) wouldn’t likely get his wish of conservatives coalescing around his candidacy if Newt Gingrich threw in the towel.

Supporters of the former House speaker were asked about their second choice of candidate, and pretty much split between Santorum and former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney.

The poll included 290 Gingrich supporters out of a sample of 1,900 Republican registered voters.

Romney was the second choice of 40 percent, Santorum of 39 percent and Rep. Ron Paul (R-Texas) of 12 percent. Ten percent picked other/no opinion.

If Gingrich dropped out, Gallup simulated that Romney would have 40 percent of Republican support and Santorum 33 percent.

Gingrich currently enjoys the support of about 15 percent of Republicans polled.
