What Do Debates Mean Really?

Sitting here in the press tent at the Reagan Library waiting for the debate to start, I am suddenly struck by an obvious question – what’s the big deal about these debates anyway? Are we electing a best debater? What do debating skills have to do with being President in the end?

I submit they deserve nowhere near as much credence as we give them. Still, the President must be a communicator and I guess this is a measure of communications skills – or the ability to come up with a witty riposte. How about Jay Leno or Greg Gutfeld for President? Better yet Grouch Marx. He made a great president in Duck Soup.
