Verne Lundquist Signs Off From College Football for Good After Army/Navy Game

Verne Lundquist went out in style: he called Army’s streak-breaking win over Navy today. Lundquist is the last of the iconic college football announcers for people from my era, a group that includes greats like Dick Enberg, Lindsey Nelson and, of course, the legendary Keith Jackson.

Lundquist holds a special place in my heart and memory for a game that I didn’t even hear him call live on television because I was attending it: the 1986 Arizona-Arizona State rivalry game. My sister and I went to Arizona and we watched the Wildcats upset a powerful Sun Devil team that would eventually go on to win the Rose Bowl. I had recorded the game, and there were so many great moments from it that I watched it over and over for years. Lundquist’s voice thus became inextricably linked to some of my favorite college football fan memories of all time.

He will still be doing some March Madness and Masters broadcasts, but it is college football for which he will long be remembered.
