We know we shouldn’t throw plastic six-pack rings in the ocean, that we shouldn’t take long luxurious showers during droughts, and that we shouldn’t burn toxic waste in our backyards. But when it comes to protecting the planet, we don’t usually think about cutting back on our streaming addiction. Yet it’s true; our binge-watching has a serious environmental footprint.
It’s estimated that the U.S.’s data centers — the computer farms where web companies like Netflix, YouTube, Hulu, Facebook, Spotify and Vimeo store their content — consume as much power as the entire state of New York. Recent reports suggest their carbon emissions are on the rise, growing by more than 10 percent a year. Much of that is driven by video streaming, with Netflix estimated to take up nearly 37 percent of the Internet bandwidth in the U.S. during peak hours.

The Climate Change Church cultists find ways to embrace and manufacture guilt that make other guilt-ridden religions look amateurish by comparison. Imagine what a miserable existence is led by people who believe that everything that makes the 21st century enjoyable is a big ol’ planet murderer. How do these people get out of bed in the morning?

The bitter irony here is that the people who fancy themselves intellectually superior because they’re Darwinists pretty much loathe everything about the evolution of humans. All of the technology that has made us number one on the food chain chart for almost ever is something to be scorned because dead Earth and stuff. As a result, they continually engage in this intellectual flagellation to punish themselves for not still being more like apes.
I went to one of the UN climate conferences a few years ago in Cancún and saw this lunacy in person. The conference expo featured a “House of the Future” that was supposed to be more climate friendly and less Earth kill-y. It looked like a rudimentary camp site with a roof over it. We are supposed to save the planet by moving back to the 1600s.
I don’t think I will be swapping my porcelain toilet for a Boy Scout camp latrine any time soon, or ever.
