The Perfect Post-Presidency Job for Obama

Spotify, the music and video streaming service, has a job for President Obama after he leaves office.

The company wants to make him “President of Playlists.”

Associated Press:

The streaming music service has posted a “President of Playlists” position on its career opportunities webpage.

Requirements for the position include “at least eight years experience running a highly-regarded nation” and a Nobel Peace Prize. Some of the responsibilities for the job are to “provide world-class leadership to our playlist editors and supporting staff” and use “all available intelligence” to analyze playlist data.

Just to make sure Obama saw the posting, Spotify’s founder and CEO, Daniel Ek, tweeted it to him Monday.

Obama hasn’t said if he’s interested.

If you think about it, the soon to be ex-president can’t afford to turn this one down. In fact, it’s right in his wheelhouse — the perfect marriage of a pop-culture company and the empty, vacuous pop-culture icon.

This is a president bored with the mundane. Heading up a think tank or foundation, or some other boring non-profit work where he’ll be out of the limelight and soon forgotten, would no doubt gall him.

Working for Spotify would give him purpose in life — a chance to put his mark on pop culture in a way that going on Jimmy Kimmel Live! or The Tonight Show never could. And, of course, he would be a YouTube sensation — a rock star to millennials. His weekly podcast would draw millions.

And the power! Oh, the power to be able to make or break a new song, a new group, or a solo artist. It would almost be like fooling Congress about the Iran deal or sticking it to conservatives by siccing the IRS on them. Heady stuff, that.

Traditionally, presidents usually ride off into the sunset, retiring with dignity by doing good works and helping those less fortunate. But Obama cares little about tradition and, as he has told us, has no plans to disappear. So a job with Spotify would satisfy his craving for attention while giving him a platform to influence the world.

Too bad the position of secretary general of the UN is already filled.
