Amidst all the controversy surrounding the National Anthem at sporting events, the President’s Cup golf tournament chose to buck tradition and sing Francis Scott Key’s words. Golf competitions don’t usually play the anthem, but this one, held in Jersey City, NJ, did. When it was sung, the camera looked to see if former Presidents Clinton, Bush, and Obama would rise for it; and each of them did. This is a much more unifying message for America than anything the NFL and President Trump have done regarding this issue. Seeing two Democrats, one of whom is the first black president, and a former political rival put their hands over their hearts and rise for the anthem was powerful.
